They also got Matt Clement, but I'm not afraid of that rotation.

Schilling - declining and not as good as he used to be.
Papelbon - needs to prove it first. Dwindled towards the end of the season as a closer.
Matsuzaka - needs to prove it first.
Beckett - injured most of the time. Dangerous in the post-season.
      Wakefield - a good pitcher.

That's a rotation of question marks if you ask me.

Right, because a 2.4ERA in August by Papelbon in 15IP with 21K is dwindling...
Just because the guy had a 0.5 ERA all year, you can't expect anyone to keep that pace. He finished with a 0.92

And oh yea, Beckett didn't miss a single start last year due to injury.

Good for him. Not so good for Boston seeing that he had his worst season last year. Too early to call him a bust though.

If they do land him, 51.1 million is a drop in the bucket to what they will reap from the Japanese market they will have tapped into with his signing.

Wakefield gets the "good pitcher" comment and Schilling is written off as declining.

No need for a rebuttal, I think you showed all that needed to be said.

Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB

I think a lot of the baseball writers should cool off their huge proclamations of the Red Sox having a strong nucleus of young stud starting pitching. I continue to hear Daniel Bard's name thrown around in articles this week, and I can't help but scratch my head.

This dude hasn't even thrown a major league pitch and people are proclaiming him as a piece of the future. Sure, he might be a filthy pitcher, but I'd estimate his chances of turning into a front line starting pitcher at no more than 20% likely. Same thing for Taylor Bucholz and Michael Bowden, who haven't even thrown an inning past Single A.

Hell, the guys currently slotted to start the season for the big league club have huge question marks surrounding them. Papelbon has not proven himself as a pitcher who can last more than 5 innings, yet. Beckett is just a thrower, not a pitcher and shouldn't really scare any team at this point. He was very, very average in 2006. Until he demonstrates progress and some brains, he's Nuke LaLoosh. Matsuzaka has never even thrown a pitch to a big league hitter. I'd say Schilling is the most reliable bet in the rotation, and he's almost 40 years old and clearly declining. Wakefield is another year older and the team can't seem to find anybody on this planet who can catch his pitches.

What does this all mean? Usually when a team has tons of legitimate question marks, some of those questions end up into real problems. Just the law of averages there. So, getting Matsuzaka is certainly an excellent move and helps, but he is just 1 player. There are many other problems to fill, and as of today in November, they are not a World Series contender.

I think it was Gammons who said on SportsCenter that Beckett threw something like 1500 pitches over 95 mph last season.

I hope they can figure out what was wrong his game last year...

If they sign him to an incentive based deal, I wouldn't be against that...at all.

I can't believe the bids went that high on this guy. Obviously, he is a can't miss prospect if the Red Sox were willing to pay that much to a guy who hasn't proven anything yet.
Are the Sox still interested in JD Drew? I don't understand that signing. I know Nixon is gone, but why would you sign another outfielder who is always injured.

The sad thing is Boston is going to be essentially paying 90 million dollars for an unknown quanitity as i've heard Boras is looking for a 40 million dollar contract.
