Re: What a joke Soriano better than Ichiro !
The question on the show was who is the better lead off hitter. Obviously it's Ichiro because he can't hit home runs, has speed, and has a high obp. Soriano hits home runs and strikes out. Sounds like the usual five hole hitter.
so to answer the question from Around the Horn, Ichiro is the better leadoff hitter. Who is the better player? Soriano by far. He's younger and is a mirror image of Barry Bonds. -

strike outs are overrated.
Ichiro is overrated.
Soriano is overrated."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Hold on guys-
Essentially, you pit Soriano's best year (only year) against Ichiros 2 seasons, and its unfair. Ichiro may have overachieved that first year, but its hard to tell. Soriano FOR SURE overachieved. Lets wait 3-4 more months and have this converstaion again.Comment

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Alfonso Soriano NYY 156 696 128 209 51 2 39 102 23 157 41 13 .300 .332 .547 0.880
Ichiro Suzuki SEA 157 647 111 208 27 8 8 51 68 62 31 15 .321 .388 .425 0.813
Based on this year, its close to a wash. Both players have similar stats except in RBIs and HRs, and Strikeouts. I would give the edge to Soriano for having a Great (overachieved) season, but if you consider what Ichiro did last year, I think Ichiro is still the better player...but not by much. Depends on what stat you personally think is important.Comment
