I'm with ya. I wish we could've seen some of the negro league stars play with the MLB guys. I'd love to see what Charleston and Gibson could've done, not to mention Satchel, if he could've started his career at a normal age. What a shame.

        IMO

Just like any list without Willie Mays on it should be thrown out.....so too should any list WITH Barry Bonds on it.

Top 5? Impossible to pick really....

        Ruth
        Gherig
        Cobb
        Mays
man that last one is tough.......Mantle I guess.
Bonds(even if you count his "700+" homeruns) better than any one of those players.....?.....thanks for the chuckle....

Say what you want about Bonds, but he was a great player, even before the allegations. More than hitting homeruns. In his prime, he had it all, power, speed, gold glove defense, hit for average. Only drawback was his relatively weak arm.

I am no Bonds fan, and I definitely think he enhanced his abilities, but you're kidding yourself if you believe he wasn't every bit as talented or good as the people on your list.

Definetly one of the best speed/power combos ever, not to mention on of the best overall hitters ever. This guy was a game breaker.

You know what they say about opinions.....

and if he would have just played with his natural ability....I would agree....but now he's damaged goods/tainted IMO....and look right at the beginning of my post.........so I'm not kidding myself.....just stating my O.

People forget he also won 8 Gold Gloves. Not only is he the only member of the 400 steals, 400 homer club, but also the only member of the 500 homer, 500 steal club. That's ridiculous.

I get the allegations, I get all the innuendo. As I said I am no fan of Bonds, but people forget he was the best player in baseball for a very long stretch of time, long before steroids and performance enhancers came along.

Why doesn't a guy like Roger Clemens get the same scrutiny when it comes to being tainted or damaged goods?

                    In no particular order:

                    Babe Ruth
                    Willie Mays
                    Ted Williams
Rogers Hornsby - the guy averaged a .402 BA over a 5-year period
                    Ty Cobb

Honestly, I know there should be at least 2 modern (1970's +) players on this list, but I'm hard-pressed to decide who they are. It's too hard to compare.

And I think Mantle is highly overrated, personally. I'm not a big DiMaggio fan, either.

Which makes it all the more mind boggling and sad.
A guy could make 10 million dollars...from scratch....not having one cent handed to him from anyone beforehand. He would be a great businessman...right?...
Then all he would have to do is steal money from his workers pension system...In essence, he would still be a great businessman....but I'd think of him as a THIEF.

Since I'm big on my sayings today ....
Build a thousand bridges and you'll be known as a bridgebuilder.
Suck one #$%& and you'll be known as a #$%&sucker:wink:

                      Barry Bonds....bridgebuilder?....I think not
Sorry.....you could roll out the awards and stats all day and all night. I'm not impressed anymore.

                      Clemens?....probably another former bridgebuilder.

I'll look for my greatest players pre-1980's. Definitely pre 1985.....and that's not my fault.

Are you saying I had to actually WITNESS a player play before I can consider him great?...I didn't realize I had such a wide sweeping influence on greatness. I like it!

I just wish he hadnt missed those prime years to the war. He missed out on about 105 homers (giving him over 600), 390 RBI (giving him over 2000), 540 hits (giving him over 3000), 390 runs (giving him over 2000).

Not to mention the year and a half he missed to injury in 1952-53 in which he only played 43 games total. He could have been the greatest player ever. Definetly one of the most cerebral players the game has seen.
