If we go by defense alone John McDonald should be in the top 10.

Khalil Greene would be a top 10 shortstop if he had patience. He's definitely in the top half in baseball. It seems like he doesn't care about walking, which doesn't bother me since he's a number 6 hitter anyways. If he would just have the OBP, then he'd make a case for top 5 SS IMO.

However, I do have a bone to pick with Tulowitski... he should be lower. If he's above 8 for anyone else, please look beyond his defense and realize that he's a Coors Field wonder. He may be better than Khalil defensively, but he's got nothing on Khalil offensively, if Khalil played half his games... or any other shortstop on the top 10 list... at Coors Field, they'd easily surpass that of Tulowitski. I'll give Tulowitski the benefit of a doubt and see how he does his sophomore year.

Tulowitzki's road OBP is nearly 40 points higher than Greene's OBP. That's something he has on Khalil offensively.

Really? If you're going to compare road stats compare them both instead of including PETCO Park for Khalil Greene into the comparison. Their road OBP's are similar. Next argument?

I can't believe somebody tried to use Gold Gloves to measure how good a player is defensively. That would mean that Derek Jeter was once a good defensive player. I'm not sure he has ever been, and I'm a huge Yankees fan.

That being said, Omar in his prime was a great great SS.

that also includes about a twenty game swing of Greene at Coors and Tulo at Petco. And Tulowitzkis is higher anyway.

To whoever said that Jack Wilson didn't deserve to be 9th on my list, he's a top 5 shortstop defensively; outstanding range, reliable arm, soft hands. Also, he won the silver slugger for NL shortstops in 2004 and had an OPS of .790 last year compared to .759 for khalil greene. If they were defensively close, i would give the edge to greene based on the fact that he plays in petco but they're not, so i would put Wilson on this list before greene.
                          MLB: New York Yankees
                          NBA: New Jersey Nets
NFL: Detroit Lions / New York Giants
                          NCAA: UNC

Tulowitzki has only played twelve games at PETCO. Greene has played in more than twenty at Coors Field... I don't know what stats you used or what season you used. You may have used last season, but that proves nothing. Khalil has proven he can hit at Coors Field and last season was an anomally.

Let's take last season then, remove both PETCO and COORS and against similar opponents in the same ballparks:

Chase Field, Turner Field, Wrigley Field, GABP, Dolphins Stadium, Minute Maid Park, Shea, Citizens Bank, PNC, Busch, AT&T, RFK and Dodger Stadium.

*OBP numbers are lower than they should be because of the unavailability of SF, SH, and HBP numbers that would affect OBP. OPS is slighted affected.

                            The Numbers:
                            Troy Tulowitzki: 239 AB, 66 H, 11 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 23 BB, 49 K's, .276/.340*/.427/.766
                            Khalil Greene: 253 AB, 72 H, 20 2B, 0 3B, 13 HR, 14 BB, 42 K's, .285/.322*/.518/.840

Troy Tulowitzki still has OBP. Sadly that's the only thing he's got on Khalil is that he walks more, but every other offensive category, except for 3B, Khalil outdid Tulowitzki in similar ballparks.

I have no problem with Khalil Greene not being on anyone's top 10 list. He's a good shortstop who's only problem is getting on-base, but I find it laughable that Tulowitzki would be an already top 7 shortstop when both he and Khalil are similar with the only difference being where they play half their games in for the season. Tulowitzki is no better than 8th in my book. If he proves that he's not a Coors Field product this season then I'll consider him a top 7 shortstop, but until then the numbers prove my point.

And the difference of Tulowitzkis +30 fielding runs above average and Greene's -6.

You've already said the offense was similar. I don't know why you are discounting defense.
