His offense is so much better than everyone else that he's the best now anyway (at least it was last season, can't predict the future), and if he could get his defense to league average he would be the best player. I'm sure he'll improve with experience, but the Marlins as a team possibly had the worst defensive infield ever last year.

I watch a lot of baseball, but I'm not going to pretend I have a perfect memory which can recall every inning either of the two have played. That's why I trust the stats more instead of remembering what I want to remember. Everyone does that whether they try to or not.
There's a difference between using stats to as an indicator, and using them as the sole basis to pass judgment.

True, a lot of stats can be deceiving and you have to look into it a bit, but if I had to choose I would rather just use VORP for hitting or FRAA for fielding instead of just using what I remember seeing.

I think fielding in particular is impossible to put a lot of numbers to. I know there are some creative new fielding stats out there, but I think it's next to impossible to quantify in to a number how great a fielder is or isn't.

It's definitely an inexact science right now and there are so many variables to take into account. You can look at several different metrics and get different results from each.

There has been quite a bit of improvement in the past few years though.

The problem with naked eye viewing for the average fan is that they see spectacular catches on highlight shows by guys like Jim Edmonds, when a player like Andruw Jones would make a quicker break on the ball and get there fast enough to make a routine grab.

btw, gold gloves can be somewhat overrated in comparing players. You dont have to win a gold glove to be a top defender.

                "Somewhat overrated" is an understatement.

                      Gold gloves mean absolutely nothing.

Seriously, that's one thing every single metric I've looked at agrees on. Jeter was terrible for ten years before putting together decent seasons in 05 and 06. Then last year he was well below average again.
