Re: Just read the MVP interview and...

I'm not saying I want less control over my players but in baseball the only two things a player does is catch and throw. they might as well make a botton to catch also. The throwing meter sounds like it will take away from the realism. For instance, you make an error of an groundball underthrowing it b/c you did'nt fill the meter up or you let an easy run score of a sac fly b/c you did'nt fill the meter up. Resulting in more user controled errors than ratings controlled errors.
Or another case would be, that the meter cancels out a fielders throwing rating and everyone who fills the meter up will have a gun arm. They say that filling it up will increase the chance of an error, but I'm pretty sure its gonna be a random thing with errors. If you fill it up everytime you throw they are not gonna allow you to have 5-10 errors are they. So it will be completely random.
Its almost like the past TPs with the aggressive and conservative throw. Why would you wanna throw conservative? I'd rather have ratings determine if I can gun a player out at home than a meter which might either give you an advantage or a disadvantage. To me its sounds like another useless EA sports feature that they are notorious for.
Now the pitching meter on the other hand sounds nice. Even tho TP has always had some type of pitching meter already. I know this one is different but its all the same if you ask me.

Graphik, I understand what you're saying and it's a valid opinion. I just happen to disagree. Think for a minute about times you've played baseball in real life. If you're playing the outfield, and the ball comes to you, you can either throw it as hard as you can back in, in which case you'll probably lose some accuracy on the throw (unless you're Vlad Guerrero), or you can try and make a more controlled throw, which will be slower but more accurate. The skill in doing that in real life is finding the right balance. I think EA's idea of the throwing meter reflects this balancing act well - in theory, once you start playing the game, you'll realize how to use the meter to balance between strength and accuracy, and then you can make determinations based on the in-game situation of which to lean more on.

One good point you did make is whether by filling the meter up everyone will have a gun in the outfield - if that is the case, then that's obviously a bad thing. What should happen is that by filling the meter up using Vlad Guerrero you'll get a different throw than you would by filling the meter up on, say, Shane Spencer - and that will have to be based entirely on player ratings, which hopefully EA did a good job on.

Obviously there's more to a good idea than simply good innovation - it also needs to be implemented properly. I think the throwing/pitching meter is a great innovation. It just remains to be seen whether EA implemented it right.

                  Spot on, Dmanchild!

Here's hoping they implement it correctly.
                  For example:

Vladimir Guerrero + red throwing meter = 80% chance of runner gunned down at the plate.
Juan Pierre + red throwing meter = 80% chance ball making it to 2nd on only two bounces!

                      Graphic,

Some places I'd likie to make softer throws:

                      1) on dps when ss and 2b are close to each other
                      2) pitcher flips to first
                      3) rundowns

I am not completely sold on the system working the way it is intended, but am willing to give it a shot. There is room for conservative throws in baseball, otherwise you run the risk of handcuffing the player you are throwing to.

Good point. Although I applaud EA on the innovations it just that I dont trust them. I bet all of my pocket lent, that you wont be able to tell the difference in a strong throw from Guerrero and some scrub on the bench when the meters filled up.

But hey, I might be wrong, actually I hope I'm wrong. But it seems like a very thick line in ball speeds in a video game vs. real life. I have yet to see a game where they may have close to 50 diffrent throwing speeds. Because they'll need over 50 if they want to correctlly portray the fielders throwing ratings.

I dont know, it just sounds farfetched to me. I liked the idea at first but then I thought about the past TPs with the agressive and conservative throws. and how no one ever used conservative.

A good thing that the meter could bring is it could make the AI baserunning more aggressive. Say a CPU controlled batter hit a shot to the wall, he gets a stand up double and you toss a soft throw to you cut-off man, and the CPU takes off for third, and the cut-off man fills the meter up and guns one to third getting the runner out.

That would be cool but once again farfetched.
