Re: I think I got it. New and improved sliders!!!

You know what...I was just reading my post above about the Phills win over the Reds with Padilla throwing a complete game. I was reviewing it and notived that he threw less than 80 pitches total in 9 innings. Hmm...I don't know if I like that.

Anyone have suggestions about how to fix that? He should have had over 100 pitches that game. Actually, 90 would have been good too, but definately not in the 70's.

Suggestions??? I was thinking raising the CPU BA to 40 and lowering the CPU BE(S) to 80. Just a thought...what do you suggest???

It nay also be that we don't tend to throw as many balls as 'real' pitchers. My pitchers usually throw @ 90 to 110 pitches per game, regardless of whether I throw a complete game, or go to the 'pen. All totalled, I usually end up throwing around 10-12 balls per game. One question: does the computer count a 'ball' that's a player swings at a 'ball' for pitch count purposes? If it doesn't then I throw around 20 balls per game....

Re: I think I got it. New and improved sliders!!!

Fanatic, I also agree that your pitch count is low because your BE(s) slider is so high. They have to swing at almost every strike you throw, meaning they aren't patient in the box. Think of it this way - if you throw a low and away strike first pitch, they are swinging. NO ONE in MLB will swing low and away on the first strike, because it is not a pitch they can realistically drive anywhere (unless they are expecting it). With your sliders, they are swinging away all the time, hitting the ball, and hence lessening the pitch count for you.

My BE(s) slider is at 55, and I think that is about right.

I am playing around with the BE(b) slider still, as I think 90 is too high (you can't set anyone up to swing out of the zone). If I have a 2-2 count that I have been working inside the whole at bat, and I throw a low and away slider, an average hitter should swing and miss a decent amount of the time, or at least swing. At 90, no one swings. Currently mine is set at 70, but that may become lower as I experiment with other teams.

Everything else looks fine. The CPU Pitch slider at 100 and TS at 1 gives me enough walks from above average pitchers, and I hardly get any from pitchers like Martinez and Maddux, which is right. I keep my CPU steal slider at 100 (the CPU runs more aggressively ALL THE TIME at this, it seems, not just stealing (I actually threw out Chavez trying to stretch a single when I wasn't paying attention, good aggressive play).

Just my $.02 though, great job on the sliders.

Ok ok. So you are using very similar sliders compared to fanatic except for the Batters Eyes (Balls & Strikes) because you feel his is too high. Would you please post your version of the sliders? I'm interested in seeing the difference between the 2 sets of sliders.

Would you please also critique your own sliders (just as fanatic has critiqued his own)? Thanks!

                          2 things...millenium.

With your settings particularly BE sliders at where it's at for you. I can see that you would get realistic pitch counts. I had them there and it was true of me as well. However, the thing that happened was that I was getting way too many Ks against the CPU. With my BE(S) at 80 I was also getting too many Ks. If I remember correctly, you have them at 55. How are your K numbers. please post them after you play a game because I'm wondering if it's high or not. Also can you tell us what setting your CPU BA is at?

Tuesday, I'm going to play around with the BE(S) and CPU BA. I plan to put them at 80 and 40 respectively and see what I get. I want to leave the BE(B) at 90 because I just don't want to get too many Ks every game, and the CPU has proven to swing at balls often enough for me.

Actually, I still want to play around with the CPU BA in the 35-37 range with BE(S) at 85 and see if I still get realistic pitch counts. One of the reasons Padilla threw a 70 pitch complete game was because I threw mostly strikes to the batters, I need to be "forced" to throw more balls by raising the CPU BA up.

However, I do agree that lowering the CPU BE(S) will help...but personally, I feel that at 55 it's too low and depending on your CPU BA I'm going to get a lot of Ks. Unless your games are not like that then in which case please report to us box scores and pitchers stats for the game so I can make an objective opinion. In other words, don't just say he threw a lot of balls. Write the typical pitch count, strikes to balls ratio, number of Ks and BB, innings pitched, etc.

Thanks for everyone's input...I do appreciate it and will take it into account.

I have my BE(s) set at 55 and it seems pretty good. The Cpu takes called strikes frequently enough, and I also havent had too much of a K problem. I play with the Astros, and I strike out good #'s with Oswalt and Miller, and hardly anyone with the lower tier starters.

I found that editing the Strikeout rating for your pitchers works pretty well. I lowered Oswalt and Miller frmo 76 and 74 to 70 and 68 and went from being able to K 13 or 14 a game to 9 or 10. I may lower it a little more. I definitely noticed an effect, however.
