Re: If you could choose your team's moves this offseason what would you do?
I don't see how going out and signing these guys detracts from developing from within. I'd understand if the plan was to trade all our pitching prospects that we're stockpiling for older, veteran stars but Cashman has stuck by his prospects ever since George started to defer to his people. We won't be players for Peavy and we didn't trade for Johan because we wanted to hold onto our young guys. The obviously do believe that's the case. It's just that our minor league system overall is weak because of previous years of neglect.MLB: New York Yankees
NBA: New Jersey Nets
NFL: Detroit Lions / New York Giants
NCAA: UNC

Answer: Probably winning the AAA World Series.
The developing cylce would not be complete if the prospects weren't called up or shipped out.Comment

And that's another reason why I prefer they only go after Sheets and/or Burnett in terms of pitching.
Going after Tex and CC does nothing to develop the youth and they'll cost more than they deserve without a doubt."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

The past 15 yrs excludes Chipper b/c his rookie year was either '94 or '95; the other 3Bs, idk about excelling...Last edited by Speedy; 11-03-2008, 05:35 PM.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

That's four type A free agents you mentioned, so the Yankees would lose their first four draft picks in June's draft. Sabathia, Sheets, Teixeira, and Ramirez will all be offered arbitration and decline, so the Yanks will have to lose those picks. Just ask the Mariners, who were Type A free agent junkies during the Gillick era, what losing all those picks does to your minor league system.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

They would actually still keep at least 1 first round pick and 1 second round pick because they couldn't sign Gerrit Cole or Scott Bittle this past draft. You can't lose your compensation picks by signing a type A free agent. Also they're probably going to add some other picks anyway if other teams sign Abreu, Marte, and Pudge.
I'm not sold on them risking arbitration to Abreu, Marte, and Pudge. No arbi offer, no compensation.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Chipper's rookie year was '95, which was 15 years ago. But i do agree with you that these players have not lived up to their hype. And you can throw Jose Oliva's name on the list.Comment

Phillies...Thank Burrell for the last two yrs where he actually earned his money.
Sign CC long-term.
Not pickup Geoff Jenkins option.
Waive buh-bye to Flash Gordon.
Re-sign Jayson Werth and Gregg Dobbs.
Sign a RH hitting OF to platoon w/ Dobbs in LF...Juan Rivera perhaps or give Gregg Golson a shot as a platoon mate.
Sign a super utility man.
Call up Carlos Carrasco as the 5th starter.
Add a bullpen arm.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

Bringing in Tex and CC also does absolutely nothing to adversely affect the development of the youth but it does fill two major holes on the big team.Comment

Re: If you could choose your team's moves this offseason what would you do?
Just to stay on topic, what I want the Yankees to do:
Sign CC (an absolute max in years and money of $175 mil/7 yrs)
Sign Teixeira (Max of $155/7 yrs)
Re-Sign one of Pettitte/Mussina
Offer Abreu arbitration, if he accepts fine, if not we get picks.
See about getting a young catcher in case Posada can't handle the workload
Pray Brett Gardner turns into Brett Butler
And as much as I don't want to add another big FA starter, make an offer to Sheets of about $30/2 yrs with an option for a third. I worry about his injury at the end of the season but if they can use that to get him to sign for just 2 years I might be fine with taking that risk. Better than commiting 4+ years to Burnett, Dempster, etc.
Line-up
LF - Damon
SS - Jeter
1B - Teixeira
3B - A-Rod
DH - Matsui
C - Posada
2B - Cano
RF - Nady
CF - Gardner
Bench
C - Molina
IF - Betemit
OF - Melky (Yeah I don't like it either)
1B/UTIL - Ranson/Duncan
Rotation
Sabathia
Wang
Pettitte/Mussina
Sheets
Joba/Hughes/etc.

Giese/Rasner
Marte
Ramirez
