Re: Tex goes to the Bronx
Yep. If you give Youk the extra 8 games that Tex played (155 vs 147) and assume his per game averages, he would have finished with 1 less HR and 3 more RBI's. Also, you have a guy that you can move to the other side of the diamond and not lose a thing defensively.Comment

Re: Tex goes to the Bronx
No, I would have an outrage because they paid the most money to NOT the best first baseman. And locked themselves in a contract with a career sub .300 hitter and less than .400 OBP.
Pujols is the best first baseman, and even Youk had arguably just as good of a year as Tex last year, and that isnt his native position. I would take Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder over Tex any day of the week. Cheaper too.
The outrage from most people is the 4 highest payrolls on one team. There wouldn't be much if the players were more spread out. You seem to forget about the 86 mil to injured more than he plays Burnett, and 180 mil to CC.Comment

Re: Tex goes to the Bronx
Mark Teixeira OPS .962
Kevin Youkilis OPS .958
Teixeira primarily play in pitchers parks while Youk played in hitters parks. If Youk was better the Sox would not have been trying to sign Teixeira.NFL: Tennessee Titans

They were trying to sign him to replace Lowell, not Youkilis, but nice try.Comment

Re: Tex goes to the Bronx
What did you expect? Can you honestly say that their expectations are the same as everyone else? Do you not think their wealth gives them a huge advantage over everyone else? And with an advantage, shouldn't a world series be expected? To think otherwise is contridictory, no? Why else spend the money?
Think of the risks they can take that others can't. They can overpay for guys like Pavano and Brown and not worry too much if they bust because they can just go out and throw more money around. If a team like the A's, Twin's or any other mid market team did that, they'd have wasted 10%-20% of their payroll on be handicapped for the next x amount of years.
What else is the point of all the spending? To waste money? Obviosly they think they can win by spending money instead of developing talent and it hasn't worked for the past 7 or 8 years. Maybe this year it will. Maybe Burnett won't fold like a tent like Pavanno did. Maybe Sabathia will pitch better for the Yankee's at Yankee stadium than he did against them. The bottom line is if these moves don't pay off, it has to be a huge embarrassment for that organization (think of the Russians losing the "Miracle" hockey game to the no-name Americans).Comment

Who knows what they were trying to do. If they thought they were set at 1st base, they would have been trying to solve their real problems. My point still remains that Teixeira is better than Youkilis.NFL: Tennessee Titans

And, as far as "Who knows what they were trying to do?" well...pretty much everyone, especially around here, where that was well known to be the plan had they signed Tex.Comment

And I actually agree with everything you just said. Their wealth does give a huge advantage, and yes their expectations are much higher and should be. But a World Seires every year, for any team is to difficult.
Also, I'd rather give you 80 million dollars for 5 years, than Carl Pavano 2.0. Worst move of any team this offseason by a long shot.NBA: New York Knicks

He is a Boras client, and is a very loyal Boras client. He was always going for the money. I don't see how he's a traitor.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Tex goes to the Bronx
They were set at first base, and still are, with Youkilis. They are weaker at third, and signing Tex would have solved that. I don't see what it so hard to comprehend about that.
