Re: Tex goes to the Bronx

Just some numbers to put it in perspective.

Teixeira’s deal, which includes a signing bonus of about $5 million and a complete no-trade provision, raises the Yankees’ offseason spending spree to $423.5 million. Just last Thursday, the Yankees completed agreements with two highly prized pitchers, giving CC Sabathia a $161 million, seven-year contract and A.J. Burnett an $82.5 million, five-year deal.
Preparing to move into their pricey new ballpark, the Yankees will hold the four largest contracts in the sport as they try to win the World Series for the first time since 2000. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez has baseball’s highest deal at $275 million over 10 years, and shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $189 million over 10 years.

Teixeira’s agreement came just one day after the Yankees received a $26.9 million luxury tax bill for 2008, when their streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ended. But with the revenue from their new stadium, where tickets are priced at up to $2,500 per game, their appetite for free agents wasn’t diminished.

It will never change as was said, the MLBPA is simply too powerful. They'll never give in to any sort of cap.

The Yankees are the poster boys for what's wrong with baseball. But there are teams who refuse to spend the money and pocket the shared revenue that are just as bad.

Maybe it's just me, but because of this I've lost all interest in baseball.

This pick-up creates a hell of a log jam in the outfield. Somebody is going to be leaving.

Like the question I posed in my blog; should the Yankees just not spend money because no other team will? No other team makes as much as the Yankees and I understand that, but I don't believe that the Dodgers, Angels, Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, or White Sox have much of a problem with revenue. The Yankees just do the business of baseball better than anyone else.

The Yankees just over pay players, if that's your definition of doing business better than anyone else, than you're right. But theres nothing to it, just offer someone loads of money and they will take it.

That's not really true. If they did, they'd have more on field success than they do.

They can spend more than everyone else, and they have a higher revenue stream, due to their geographic location, and taking advantage of some baseball TV rules, but I don't think you can say they do the business of baseball better. They are the team from the country's largest market, that's the A-1 reason for their financial success.

They have 26 World Championships and are worth more money than any other sports franchise in the US. I think they do baseball better than anyone.

How about the Mets? How many rings they got? How about the Dodgers, Cubs, Angels, White Sox, Rangers, Astros, etc. Those are all huge markets.

If it was 10 or 30 years ago, you'd be right. That line of thinking hasn't translated in to success in recently.

                                Yep.

Doing baseball better is fielding a playoff/ws team and not overpaying to do so.

They only go through one year with their young talent pitching, and they gave up on them to overpay free-agents. I guess they do baseball better. Even though it takes more than one year for your young talent to click. Now they will have young wasted talent, with no game time to develop (scratch that Burnett with be in the IR).

They look more like the little rich kid who was so spoiled, they threw a temper tantrum and went on a spending spree, when they didnt get what they wanted the year before. Instead of developing what "awesome young talent" I heard being talked about on here last year at this time.
