Does production at the beginning of the season not count as much as at the end?

    It's awful, awful logic.

Absolutely...and it could be argued that Carpenter actually outpitched Lincecum in the first half. I'm not disagreeing that Lincecum was a good choice...I'm just saying it's not the slam dunk everyone is making it out to be. You have a couple of pitchers who are very close in performance...I have no problem if a voter gives some credence to performance in the last month. You have to separate them somewhere.

Ah yes, one of my favs. As if a win in September is worth more in the standings than a win in May. That argument is right up there with the 9th inning being more important than the 3rd inning.

Agreed. If you want to see stupidity at it's finest, check out the All-Star game rosters. A dog picking random balls out of a bin would have been more accurate.

It's not just about Dusty Baker, hence the "other assorted morons" in the title.

I actually thought about bumping it after Phillips said he would trade Strasburg for Oswalt. I came real close but thought nobody would be interested. We could revive it if we tried. After the fiasco today involving the All-Star rosters, we have enough material to last a long long time.

Remember when FJM enabled comments? It lasted all of about 4 hours until they disable them again.

Okay, so I DVR'd the MLB Network special on the 2001 season and got around to watching it this afternoon. Their was a section discussing Bonds and how amazing it was that he kept hitting even after teams started walking him. Dusty Baker, Bond's manager at the time in case you forgot, was on camera giving this gem of a comment:

"It was amazing because as a hitter no one likes to walk. After you keep getting walked it gets frustrating, but he never did and just kept hitting the one pitch he'd get a night."

Not that it's a surprise, but I still had to chuckle...

I can kinda see Baker's point here. I think he's right. I mean imagine yourself as a hitter and your goal is to HIT THE BALL! Obviously you're going to get frustrated if pitchers are avoiding anything to do with you.

This is one of those "if it wasn't Baker saying that it's kinda understandable" kind of things.

I don't think it is. The goal of a hitter is TO NOT MAKE AN OUT. If I could go to the plate and walk every time that would be fine with me. I don't understand getting frustrated because you are accomplishing your goal of not making an out.

I certainly see your point but not every hitter is the same. Some guys want to get hits and help the ballclub that way while others are patient and will take the walk. Oh and making an out isn't the worst thing in the world as you can still collect an RBI that way with fielder's choice, sacrifice bunts and sac flies.

I watched the exact same thing today, it was great (the entire episode, not just on Bonds). It really makes me miss the old days of baseball, the great players that were around then and the way teams were built, the way the fans appreciated the sport, etc.

What was it that you were chuckling about again?

EDIT: Oh, I missed the other posts. See, this is one of the biggest reasons I hold Bonds at much higher regard than any other hitter and I have said it many-a-times before this time. Guys like Pujols are finally getting pitched around maybe a little bit, but when you're intentionally walked 120 times in a year and get walked 230+ times in the actual season, you can't help but be impatient at the plate. Many people in the majors just like to swing the bat, they just want to hit the ball. Look at Pablo Sandoval for the Giants right now, he is just swinging to swing. He doesn't want to get walked. Bonds was different and I try and follow in his footsteps.

"Get a good pitch to hit and don't miss it." Sometimes you have to wait for that good pitch to hit. Sometimes you're Bonds and you get walked five times in a game, four are intentional (yes, there was a game like this), and you never get to swing. You tell me a player that wants to do that. Yes, they would prefer getting on base than getting out, but when you're a guy like Bonds and you can do some serious physical damage with your bat, you like to get it off your shoulder. Any other player would get greedy and start hacking at a lot of pitches. Bonds never did, and he made the best of the few that he got. You literally cannot say that with 100% about any other player that you have watched play the game, mostly because nobody ever got walked at the rate that he did.
