I'm still pissed at Dusty from Game 7 2002.

My roommate just said Dusty Baker is a good manager because the Reds are good this year. He said Baker turns teams around. He also said he doesn't have enough knowledge about him to make an intelligence argument.

God bless Tony La Russa for jawing with that brainless moron during the Reds/Cards game tonight. Apparently, the actual brawl started because Chris Carpenter yelled something at Baker. If that's the case, I wanna know what it was so Carpenter can officially become one of my favorite players.

The brawl started because Phillips said the Cards are whiners and moaners and that he hated them. When he came up to bat in the first he did the whole hi how are you thing to Molina and tapped the back of his shin guards. Well Molina told him not to talk to him or touch him, that is how the whole thing started. The actual pushing and shoving that happened later on in the "brawl" was stared because Carpenter and Rolen started yacking at each other. They have a history of not getting along, Carpenter was yelling at Baker, but I am not for sure why. I can tell you one thing Carpenter wants no part of Rolen.

Apparently he said "F U." Hopefully Dusty said it right back to that jerk. Like jake said, that all started with Phillips and Molina at home.

Everything should work together. No one philosophy should be the end all of any baseball conversation.

There are guys that look like good ballplayers that just aren't. But there are also guys that have good numbers that are pure flukes.

None of the statistics or eye tests are going to prove one or the other. Together they can help see what makes sense.

But that's why I don't really get into these discussions anymore. It seems like most people want to choose one side and either ignore or insult the other.
No, what you said was my point exactly...I don't discount stats because "I amn not smart enough to get them"

My main thorn is the attitude of those who follow the stats first mentality and throw obscure stats out there as if it was some sort of 'measuring contest' if you get my drift...

That and the whole idea of someone who probably struck out in slow pitch softball calling Dusty Baker a moron is unsettling.

Agree or disagree with the man, but to say he knows NOTHING about baseball is ludicrous

Obscure doesn't necessarily equal right or wrong. And they're only obscure if you choose to ignore them.

Argumentum ad hominem. I didn't play professional baseball like Dusty Baker or Joe Morgan, but what does that have to do with the fact that some of their baseball thinking is completely inane?

Joe Morgan was a ridiculously good baseball player, but you don't even have to be sabermetrically-inclined or a "SABR SNOB!!!" to realize he's a complete idiot...unless you happen to believe that left-handers are considerably slower at delivering their pitches (WTF?).

I don't think I said anything that out-of-line. "Shed the ignorance" is a pretty mild response to a troll whose purpose was to bait posters.

Re-read page 32 if you want all the context. Childish posts like "Talking to humans>>>Stat-crunching CC Sabathias xFIP+SIERA/2" are just stupid to me and deserve to get called out.

There are other intangibles that come into play

If Halladay has 12 CGs...more than likely he will have a higher ERA...a pitcher winning 7-1 will usually pitch to contact and giving up 2 runs means nothing

Jack Morris was notorious for that as was Walter Johnson

As for Jimenez...he is streaky but when he is on...he is ON. 3 dominant starts and he is right back in the discussion

Well, first, we're talking about things the writers vote on, like wins and ERA. If the season ended today, 17-6/1.98 would get the nod over 14-8/2.34.

That aside, Wainwright has 5 CG (would probably be 6 if not for the rain delay today) himself (to Halladay's 8) so we're not talking about a guy who pitches six and leaves.

Unfortunately, even if Wainwright has the better overall numbers, I think this is Jimenez's award to lose. He is the media darling this year and only a subpar September can ruin him.

On a completely different note, Rick Sutcliffe on last night's ESPN telecast chalked the improvement of Texas' pitching staff to their pitching coach, Mike Maddux. The statement was accompanied by a display looking like this:

                                2008: 5.37 ERA
                                2009: 4.38 ERA

Sutcliffe gushes: "And this is before they even got Cliff Lee. You talk about improvement!"

Yeah, want to see the real improvement?

                                2008 team UZR: -45.8
                                2009 team UZR: 25.6

                                And isolating the defense improvement:

                                2008: 4.88 xFIP
                                2009: 4.56 xFIP

                                Down with ERA!
