My Thoughts After A Weekend of ASB....

THE GOOD: Fantastic opening. Fantastic ballparks. Awesome in game animations (pitchers warming up in bullpen is great. All games should have this.) The game truly looks wonderful and is a lot of fun. Much better than MVP. Really "feels" like baseball and I love the old time feel rather than the modern fast paced openings of so many other games. The features within the game take a back seat to no other game.

THE BAD: The gameplay is far behind HH and WSB. The user can draw walks, but doesn't really give up many if he doesn't want to. For example, 3-2, bases loaded bottom of the 9th, 3-2 count, what do you think I'm going to throw? Automatic strike. Now, it may be hit, cause it's in the strike zone, but this game never gives you the feeling you're biting your nails and then......Arrrgh, you walked him. Sometimes, I want to try to throw a strike but can't for whatever reason. Secondly, too many fly balls, especially to center (zone batting, hate cursors). Thirdly, too many hit batters. Fourth, no variation in a fastball by Randy Johnson and Matt Mantei. Both hard throwers. Johnson's ball should have more movement. Fifth, no lefty/righty so strategy is gone. Doesn't matter in this game. Sixth, too many Willie Mays over the shoulder grabs. Not realistic.

Now, don't get me wrong. This is FUN GAME and I think the in game features are the best compared with the other games. No other game packs in as much from broken bats, to collision detection. Just missing out on the pticher batter interface (no walks results in bad pitch counts) and the gameplay elements described above. "Feels" like baseball, just doesn't play like it. Love that bullpen warm-up, though. Just my take.

Oh, yeah, also too many high scoring games with 18-20 hits. Not very realistic.

I agree with a lot of your gripes. If they had a slider for pitch accuracy like WSB or a meter like MVP it would be much better. Try pitching without the pitch aid, strike zone or vibration on. Makes locating the corners a little harder. ASB tried to do the HH zone interface but you can tell it's in its infancy. It needs a lot of work and the result is that you need to use the icons for the best results. I know ya hate em' but give em' a try before you take the game back! Lastly use the Phillies and bat with Thome. Against a righty his icon is huge but against a lefty, the icon is much, much smaller. The lefty/righty matchups do impact the batters. Plus, if you think about it the movement towards/away from the batter make the matchups interesting not just the fact that the pitcher is left/right handed.

Anywho, give it a few days with the icons before you toss it. ASB can definately be an aquired taste.

seems to me you don't like the gameplay too much but you like the visuals, well i can only recomend that you go with the gameplay thats suits you're preferences, play this game a little more and i can almost gaurantee you that this game will start growing on you like you won't believe! And how many of these games were against great teams?

Thanks, HMMcoy, I'll check out the icon with Thome. Maybe lefty righty is implemented in the game, huh? A previous post indicated otherwise and the roster managment doesn't break down ratings for righty and lefty. Anyhow, did you try any of the other games and what was your reason for sticking with ASB? Purely animation and graphics?

Lefty/righty is definitely in the game. It's most noticible in the normal batting mode, because you can see the changes in both the overall cursor size, and in the sweet spot size. A players hot/cold zones are also different based on lefty/righty.

I agree that there are a few too many Willie Mays catches, but it's not like last year where it was almost impossible to hit the ball over the fielder's head.

What level are you playing on?

Awesome, if righty lefty is in the game. I'm playing Veteran level, zone batting. Please tell me what you like about ASB over HH or WSB. Was it purely visuals? Does it bother you that walks aren't a big part of this game? How about pitches not varying much except on speed (i haven't had enough experience to tell much difference, but JROD's review indicates there isn't much difference even in speed).
