While he didn't intend to kill those people per se, he was more than aware that was a distinct possibility and did so anyway. Not to mention his previous plea agreement stipulates that if he kills someone while driving drunk he can indeed be charged with murder.
This is taken from the post directly above the post you quoted me. This is the plea I was referring to. Page 22.
When rookie Randall Cobb was told by this U.S. Marine that he was a big fan of the wide receiver, Cobb said, “I think I’m a bigger fan of yours.”

ok i see that the obvious was stated in the plea, that he could injure or kill someone, but how can his plea stipulate that if he drives drunk and kills someone he will be charged with ? in california can they also stipulate that if you shoplift you will be charged with armed robbery? that's weird... in washington pleas only effect the case you are pleaing to, there can be no stipulations about future cases...

Man pleads not guilty in Nick Adenhart's death

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP)—The man charged with killing Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart(notes) and two others in a drunken-driving crash pleaded not guilty Monday to three counts of murder as relatives of the victims looked on.

Andrew Thomas Gallo also pleaded not guilty through his attorney to three other felony charges and one misdemeanor in connection with the April 9 collision that occurred just hours after Adenhart pitched six scoreless innings in his season debut.

I guess the legal strategy is plead not guilty, go to trial, and let the jury decide the punishment.

I mean the dick is guilty, no doubt about it.

But isn't it one of those "get off a bit lighter" if you admit guilt? I mean it costs a lot of money to go through the trial process, and to find the man guilty after all of that is probably sort of like a middle finger at them, where they would probably be deemed to be more inclined to punish the defendant more heavily, no?

Then again, I don't really know all of the ramifications. Basically, I thought this was done with a long time ago; little did I know it's only just starting...

How much lighter do you really think is possible? Considering the cards stacked against him, this was probably the best option for the 0.001% chance he gets off.

His attorney are trying to get the trial moved out of Orange County because they believe he cannot get a fair trial there.

I'm not sure what they deem as a fair trial. No matter what county the trial is held in the facts speak for themselves.

I remember as a kid thinking lawyers would only defend someone they thought was innocent if they were pleading not guilty. Youth is a great source optimism. Really though, I don't know who this guy's lawyer is, but what a scum bag. He was three times the legal limit, how can you even try to get him off and sleep at night?! This is one of those trials that should be an open and shut case but likely will get dragged out.

I actually can't see how he could have anything but a public defendant unless someone in his family is a lawyer. I can't imagine a public defendant would go through the trouble of trying to get the trial moved out of Orange County though. All pretty strange.

A fair trail? Some dumb *** who had DUIs up the butt took 3 lives driving drunk without a license. What's fair in that? Stop screwing around and put this low life in a cell forever. I'd say give him the death sentence but Lord knows that won't happen. Sad because this kid doesn't deserve to live another second.

F him. Death penalty is too good for him. Let him rot in prison for the rest of his life.

I see your reasoning, but public defender or not, he has to do everything in his power to ensure the defendant gets a fair trial. My best reference to this would oddly be Cape Fear. If you have seen that movie just look at the reason why deniro wants to kill that guy, same reasoning.

He most likely has someone working to make a name for themselves. A thousand or 2 dollars would be all it would take just for a decent lawyer, but that's just for DUIs. The murder charge might increase it, but the family could get a loan most likely to pay for it if they are still going to spend money on him.

The not guilty was probably because the DA doesn't want to settle or gave them a close to maximum offer. Unless that changes, it goes to trial. Then they just have to get 1 idiot to change the verdict or sentencing (if California allows the jury to decide).
