So STL drafted him the next yr, and it's better this way anyway...a softie like him would never make it in Philly.

    BOooooooooooooooo the Drew.
Ahhhhh, that's right. I knew it was something like that but couldn't remember.

What about the three 'Generation K' pitchers during the '95 and '96 seasons for the Mets? Gregg Jefferies had ridiculous amounts of hype for his debut in '88.

Mauer was another with huge hype.

In this neck of the woods, the most hyped debuts have been Griffey, A-Rod, and Felix. With Griffey's being the biggest by far, IMO.

Oh my God...I was already into listening to WFAN by like '96 or '97 and everything was Ricky Ledee this, Ricky Ledee that. By that time, Ruben Rivera was already gone. I thought Yanks fans would've learned their lesson by then lol. Suzyn Waldman was crazy over some Ledee. Sounded like she salivated just to bring his name up.

Another debut that was so SO crazed up was Scott Rolen. He was supposed to make the 3rd base for the Phillies close to like centerfield for the Yankees. Well...we see how that turned out.

Rolen did a good job for the Phillies, though. I realize that has some negative history for Phillies fans, but Rolen was productive and a good defender at 3B. It's unfortunate that it didn't last longer.

Todd Van Poppel was easily the most hyped debut I can remember. Well him and Pete Incaviglia... Both of them were hyped so much they had no chance to live up to expectations.

I sometimes wonder if people around here realize there was baseball before 2004.

Rivera was supposed to be a 5 tool player, he turned out to be a 2 tool player. He was a very good defensive OF, and had an absolute cannon for an arm. Showed some flashes of power but never could put the bat on the ball with any consistency.

I will say this, he actually made some very key plays defensively and on the basepaths for the Padres as they made their drive to the WS in '98.

I think it was that and some cash from some wallets in the locker room.

I was pretty young when Dwight Gooden made his ML Debut but I imagine there was a ton of hype because of the Minor League performance he had and the market he was in. Does anyone know what type of hype surrounded his debut?

I remember the Van Poppel hype very well. He was supposed to be the next Nolan Ryan and even told the Braves that if they drafted him #1 overall that he wouldn't sign with them.

Who did they draft instead? Chipper Jones.

The Orioles were certainly prepared...they had the warehouse stocked with Wieters #15 shirts...picked a grey one up for myself.

It was all about Brien Taylor that draft. He was the number 1 taken. My friend was taken in 3 round by the Giants. But Todd and Brien were beast in HS, so was my friend Chris. Good old 91 wow that was a while ago. I guess Todd was taken in 90, I could have sworn he came out the same year.

I live in Texas and I knew his debut was coming tha day before. I had already known he would debut sometime this year.

I felt like Scott Williamson was pretty hyped in the late 90s to be some great pitcher and turned out very average.
