Man, thank God we didn't draft Van Poppel.

I'm sure this was mentioned but Rocco Baldelli was hyped to kingdom come. I remember people saying he was the next Joe Dimaggio!Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Most hyped debut ever?
I'm sorry, but let's not start comparing this guy to Joe Mauer quite yet. Yes, it must be exciting for O's fans because they have a very good young, up-and-coming team. But take a look at Joe Mauer's stats for May and resign yourself to the fact that Matt Wieters will NEVER put up a month like that in his career.Comment

Bold statement. Only time will tell, but I think that you are way off base in that assumption that Mauer's May will be unreachable for this rookie who has all of what 12 MLB AB's right now.
Anyways. Sports illustrated posted this article today. I forgot all about Bo Jackson's hype.

Re: Most hyped debut ever?
Wow at the Johnny Bench story!
Joe Posnanski: When I was working on The Machine -- my upcoming book about the 1975 Reds, and yes, I'm already pathetically hyping it -- I learned Johnny Bench was so hyped in the minor leagues that the Class A Peninsula Grays actually retired his number after he played 98 games there in 1966. He did hit 22 homers there, 10 over a "Hit it here, win a free suit" sign, so Bench was a sharp-dressed man when he moved up to Triple A. Hyping brilliantly talented young catchers is hardly something new.
BTW I'm gonna have to get this book. I've always had a fascination for the Big Red Machine.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

.414/.500/.838 - I know it's early, and yes the statement is bold. I just think it's hard for any player to put up those kind of numbers over a month - especially while catching.Comment

Re: Most hyped debut ever?
I don't think it's too far fetched to say Weiters will never have a month like that, the vast majority of players never will. This isn't an indictment on Weiters in any way, simply a recognition of how ridiculous Mauer's month was (especially from a catcher).
*I still think using arbitrary statistical cutoffs and time periods like a certain month's production is silly though, and I feel like a douche for doing so*Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Most hyped debut ever?
If Mauer did it, someone else can.
And before a Twins fan takes that as a knock, my point is, if one person can reach those numbers, another player can reach those numbers. No one possesses a talent alone.
Will it be difficult? Of course. But I would never make bold statements about a player never achieving something in his entire career. Maybe for his rookie season, yea. But, if the guy really takes off, he could end up being better than Mauer. You never know."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Second, who would argue against any comparison based on one player's first 3 games of their MLB career compared to a single month from another player?
You're taking "fanatic" to another level. This thread isn't even about how any of these players actually perform.Comment

Re: Most hyped debut ever?
Personally, I want a catcher who calls a good game. In the minors, he was usually DH so coupled w/the fact that he's dealing w/a young rotation of rookies themselves, I'd like to see how he does behind the plate.
In the 4 games he's been in the majors, he's caught 3 games...Yesterday, Rich Hill pitched a gem w/Wieters (although against Seattle) and on his debut Bergesen pitched 7 innings w/Wieters and only gave up 2 ERs against Detroit. So far so good.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment
