Re: why are their few blacks in MLB??????????

There's a pretty simple answer to this, actually.

Notice how their aren't very many strong high schools in baseball from big cities. Where I live (Dallas/Fort Worth) the best teams are from the suburbs of Arlington, Duncanville, Southlake, Plano, Carrollton, etc.

High school baseball players play baseball year-round in all sorts of fall, winter, and spring leagues. This takes a lot of money to do, as well as a lot of time and organization to put it on.

This is much like the Dominican and Puerto Rico, which play baseball year-round.

Most of the blacks that play in the major leagues grew up in wealthy suburban neighborhoods: Griffey Jr., Bonds, McLemore, Clayton, Frank Thomas, etc.

In the inner cities, what does it take to play basketball. Simple. A ball. There's courts everywhere and pickup games all day, every day. And football is more of a game of sheer strength and speed, not a game that takes the type of skills refinement of hitting a baseball.

But look out, now the Europeans are threatening to take over the NBA, too.

I'm not racists nor am I trying to sound racists, but to whoever said that MLB doesn't do a good job of marketing baseball to the black people, thats a good thing. Not that I don't want blacks playing baseball, but do you really wanna see MLB games go to an advertisment or something by using a bunch of rap music or during the 7th inning stretch have Ja Rule and Murder Inc. singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame?" Now, by saying this I've probably made alot of people offended, and I'm sorry. But look at the NBA and how they've marketed their game. Their is a bunch of thugs out their playin ball and then goin back and smokin a bunch of weed after the game. I just don't want to see this happen to baseball. Once again, I'm not racists, my favorite players are Griffey and Bonds and many other black players, this is just my two cents.

I'll just take the opposite extreme of this post. I think that you have some good ol' boy racists out there who don't want see many african americans exceed at baseball. Kind of like yourself when you say it is a good thing that MLB does not marke itself in the black community. I think some old school historians are really pissed about the fact that Three of the top five baseball players of "ALL TIME" are black. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Barry Bonds. Not to mention that nobody wanted to get in there and mix it up with Bob Gibson. MLB can spend the resources to market the games to black but they really choose not to.

LOL!!! When you have to post a few times stating you are not a racist it's probably a safe bet that you are.

Re: why are their few blacks in MLB??????????

I agree with whoever it was that said that 12% of the US is african american, and that number in baseball is 11%. If these numbers are accurate, then that makes sense.
As for the "inner city kids can't play pick up games", I don't necessarily think that's true. I don't know a lot about the upbringing of Dontrelle Willis, but I know he says his delivery developed from playing a game called "strike-out". They probably didn't do this on a baseball diamond. Now even though I am white, and have never lived in the inner city, I am going to use myself as an example. When I was a little younger, I owuld play pickup games with a friend all the time. Oftentimes, it was just the two of us, playing one on one, with ghost runners, using a crack in the sidewalk as second base, with a three story apartment building looming right over us, and using tennis balls instead of baseballs. We would do this almost everyday. It was actually easier for us to get a game of baseballgoing than to go across the street to play basketball (though we did do that to mix it up every once in a while) We didn't play on big fields, with top of the line bats (we used plastic, $5 bats), but we still constantly played the game.
