You're right, people weren't complaining as much, but that's because Ripken wasn't an a--hole. Plus he was voted in. Clemens wasn't voted in. If you poled the fans I'd bet my left nut that Zito would win over Clemens, easily.

Again, if this is about career merit, lets get Rickey in there, too. Send some youngen' home in his sted... that's the point, Clemens is REPLACING some more deserving younger player. Personally, a little bit of Clemens goes a long way, and there's been more than a little bit of that jackass the last few years.

    EXACTLY.

If Clemens get to go in, why can't Rickey?

After all, Henderson is the all-time stolen base leader...it would be just as justifiable to have Henderson in the game as it would Clemens.

Clemens is an a-hole, no doubt about it. Yeah, he's one of the greatest pitchers ever...blah. Last time I checked, I never saw Greg Maddux (whom I believe is better) or Curt Schilling approach the game the same way Clemens does. They both play the game the way it needs to be played.

For Clemens to replace Zito is such a shame I won't be watching the game tonight, and I certainly won't ever have any respect for the "great" Roger Clemens.

I guess someone needs to talk to Selig. The fans have spoken. The all star game shouldn't be the best players, it should just be a personality contest. Nicest guys at each position.

Why is Clemens an A-Hole? Because he's competitive and he pitches inside? Does the name Pedro ring a bell? He pitches inside more than anyone in the game, yet no one says anything because he's Pedro. If you're basing your statement on the Piazza incidents, that was a long time ago.

And your Rickey point is ridiculous (I know it was in jest, but). Clemens is actually having a very good year, and a case could be made for him based on merit alone, let alone all the milestones he's reached. I feel bad for Zito, but don't blame Clemens or the Yanks for this one.

And to the person who said Varitek is deserving of a spot, umm, he is on the team already. The biggest mistake was Lance Carter. That is a joke. Huff or Baldelli would have been a much better choice for the Rays. Then Hudson, who isn't going probably due to the fact that he only has 6 wins, could get that spot. But again, the All-Star game has never been about fairness.

Come on, you're here to tell me that if you weren't a Yankees fan (I'm assuming you are), that you would think it's acceptable for Clemens to be in the AS game?

He didn't get voted in for a reason, and now for the league to come out and say that he'll replace Barry b/c of "health reasons" is completely insane.

Roger got in b/c the league felt bad about leaving him out. Boo-hoo. It's not like he's leaving the game on a bad note anyway...he'll be in the Hall and have over 300 wins and 4,000 strikeouts.

To make Barry sit out is totally unjust...if anybody should have to be replaced, it should be Lance Carter. No way does he deserve to be on the team.

You know what, I'll relent on the issue as long as this is Clemens' last year. It's a shame the baseball fan-base will be robbed of the chance to watch one of the games brightest young pitchers in favor of an aging jackass they've already seen a hundred times over-- and see do assenine and embarrassing things for both baseball and the human race. But if this is the price we have to pay for him to retire than so be it. He just better not decide he's going to ride the Yanks for another WS ring next season, which he just might do.

This merit arguement is bullsh#t when the player replaces a better player. End of story.

Let's see him get shelled today. Go NL.

Go NL.
