Just watched it on mlb.tv You guys aren't kidding. That play wasn't even close. I don't know if there's an argument for instant replay or eye glasses after seeing that. What a shame, he might go the rest of his career and not pitch a game like that.

Wow, just wow. What a time to blow such an obvious call. Like some of you, I literally feel sick to my stomach right now. I really hope there is someway this can be overturned and ruled a perfect game.

Regarding replay, I'm all for it. I odn't think it would hold up the game too much. I say do it college football style and have an extra ump watch every play on a moniter. If there's a close play, he can buzz in, or the umps can appeal to him. Usually doesn't take more than 30 seconds in CFB. If we can watch these managers go out and argue calls for as long as they do, why not spend that time getting it right?

I still can't believe he made the call...no excuse for missing that. Having said that, if Gallarraga has already moved on, and it sounds like he has, than everyone one of us should as well. The wiki stuff/death threats really is disgusting.

Let me guess, you're a product of the 1990's alternative group learning experiment in our education system. How can you NOT assign the responsibility to the guy who made the mistake. What am I missing here?

Hmm...will we see high fast balls high in the zone that the catcher juuuust might not get his glove up high enough to catch?

            That was awful.

There should be a clause like in golf where you can speak honestly to a foul.

I'm sure they're rethinking putting Joyce behind the plate. Hmm, wonder if he's watching "The Fan" on Encore in the hotel room right now?

Didn't even need to read past the thread title to know what this was about, I saw it on my local 11:00 news. I don't know what's more unbelievable. The fact that he blew the call or the fact that this should have been the 3rd perfect game this season and 2nd in 5 days.

Can someone put the Cleveland coverage of the blown call on youtube please? That might be the only way to savalage my week.

Why didn't they over turn the call? Did he not even ask for help? That is worse than blowing the call.

It's just a lot of announcers saying Jim Joyce blew the call and that they feel sick for Galarraga.

The umpires won't overturn the call on that play because Joyce was the only umpire in position to make the call.

I know people have mentioned the umpires huddling and getting it right, but the other three umpires would have simply asked him what he saw and he saw the runner beat out the throw so the runner is safe.

The only thing that could overturn the call is something that only exists in limitation in MLB.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

There have been a few cases, this year I believe, where a certain play is ruled an error or a hit and vice versa only for the next day for the call to be overturned. I think if the right people within the MLB see that this is an obvious blown call, extremely obvious, then it gets overturned and ruled an out and the game will be marked as a perfect game.

I doubt that happens, but for Armando's case I sure hope it does. The guy was screwed without a kiss.

My opinion, as seem to be the prevailing sentiment here, is that the call be right, regardless of how long it takes to get it right.

The bottom line is that this call was horrible and absolutely wrong, and there should be some mechanism to correct it as well as prevent future bad calls from happening.

                                Another overly dramatic thread title.

Mistakes happen, he screwed up and he admitted so, quite the feat for anybody in sports these days. He even personally apologized to Galaragga.

Mariano Rivera calls him the "best umpire we have in the game," and that sentiment is shared by many other MLB players and coaches.

He choked, he apologized. It will haunt him until the day he dies.
