Just goes to show how much money truly matters and is a sobering wake-up call for us all to be appreciative of our friends and family who are in their senior years.

After watching the Yankeeography YES is showing right now. Not just his franchise, but for the communities important to him as well. The other side of the Boss we never usually saw.

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80

Love him or hate him (I mostly hated his business ethics though i've seen some 60 Minutes interviews in his later years where he seemed like a pretty good guy) George Steinbrenner WAS the Yankees for the longest time. The man put a huge target on his chest but also at the same time demanded much of his team to the point that he did some rather irrational things. As much as I didn't like him from a business aspect I got to admit he spent to win and he wasn't so reckless that he didn't have a plan for the future as he and his sons basically set the infrastructure for the way most teams are run today what with the YES Network and using synergy to bring in added revenue.

R.I.P. to the last of the truly iconic owners in sports and an interesting figure overall.

You may not always agree with how he went about things, but you've got to respect an owner that wanted to win as badly as he did, and spared no expense in order to put a championship team on the field.

Pretty much this. He did alot for New York baseball. And as much as I despised the man, I'd take one year with him as the Mets owner over the eternity of futility of the Wilpons any day, as his refusal to accept failure was unquestioned. An owner who seemed to care about winning more than making a profit, something you almost never see in ANY sport. R.I.P.

Wow is all I can say. It was no secret that his health wasn't good for some years now so I can't say it's unexpected but it's still something you can't believe. For as long as I can remember he was the Yankees for good or bad but you always knew that he was coming with a team to win it all if he could.

He will be missed. Although he did alot for the Yankees there's no doubt he did alot for sports period. I grew up in the Bronx and of course have been a Yankee fan all my life and during some rough times in the borough it was always nice to say "Yeah but we got the Yankees". Gotta thank "The Boss" for that.
