The only reason people hated him was because he was beating their team. I had come to respect him and I wish all of my teams had an owner who cared about winning like he did. The only thing I've never been able to figure out is what happened to his teams in the late 1980's-mid 1990's.

A lot of bad trades and Free Agent signings was what did them in in those years. The pitching staff overall wasn't all that great either.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80
As a life-long New Yorker & a Yankee Fan today is a very sad day. Today we lost the Heart & Soul of our organization. A man that not only owned a baseball team, but a man who loved his team & their fans. The man wanted to win. Sometimes @ all cost, but never did he do this for himself. He always did it for the fans. For the city of NY.
George M. Steinbrenner III Thank You so much for everything you've done as the owner of the NY Yankees, not only for this city, but for the game of baseball. Though the game will survive without you, it will never be same..
Take care good friend, you will be missed..

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80
Wow is all I can say. It was no secret that his health wasn't good for some years now so I can't say it's unexpected but it's still something you can't believe. For as long as I can remember he was the Yankees for good or bad but you always knew that he was coming with a team to win it all if he could.
He will be missed. Although he did alot for the Yankees there's no doubt he did alot for sports period. I grew up in the Bronx and of course have been a Yankee fan all my life and during some rough times in the borough it was always nice to say "Yeah but we got the Yankees". Gotta thank "The Boss" for that.
Hard to find a single thing more important to the people of the Bronx and George Steinbrenner was The Boss of that single thing."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80
one of the saddest days in a long while in Yankee history. Boss you will be missed greatly as your contributions to this team were nothing short of incredible. You went out with one last hurrah's with the Yankees remaining as the defending champions of baseball. you are the only owner who deserves a spot in Cooperstown

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80
Love him, or hate him, there is no denying the fact that he had a huge influence on the game of baseball, for the better. Most notably with the small market teams, which helped emensely when it came to parody.
RIP - Mr. Steinbrenner.Comment

Re: George Steinbrenner Dead At Age 80
I remember WAAAY back in the day you could cop free tickets to a Yankee game from the community center or from the scouts. I could walk down University Ave, past the Ford dealership at the bottom ( I think it was Ford, I think it's a supermarket now) go through the last of the grass and trees in the Bronx , lol, and be at Yankee stadium in no time and watch a game in the nosebleed section. Those days are gone now , as is the old stadium and now as is George. Hope this doesn't doom the Yankees. His family has been running things really anyway in the past few years so hopefully tradition carries on.Comment
