Re: Derek Jeter
I don't know about the HOF debate, but I will say that Derek Jeter isn't even the best shortstop on his team right now. Now, that's not going to stop the Yankees IMO, but Jeter is going to hurt this team the more he plays for them. If the Yankees want to continue to advance, they need to stop overpaying for players past their prime.
That being said, I hope the Yankees re-sign him and Rivera. Young teams like the Rangers will light up the Yankees for less.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Derek Jeter
Huh? A shortstop who averaged 207 hits, .314, 17 HR, 80 RBI, .385, 23 SB, a season isn't HOF-worthy? Just the little things he does, like the way he always works the hell out of a pitcher, he's a hell of an offensive player, and he's been that way spanning across three decades now. He's easily a HOF'er.
The only thing the Yankees affected is his runs scored totals, and gave him the opportunities to be a "postseason hero". A guy as good as him could have played in any lineup, and made them a better lineup for it. He's the ultimate 1-2 spot hitter.Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
Jeter's a lock for the HOF, but I do understand what some people are trying to say. It was just not a good example of baseballs unpredictable voting
Now an example I would use would be a guy like Todd Helton with the Coors effect. I'm not saying Helton is or isn't a HOF, that's not the discussion. Just that the Coors effect makes it hard since numbers are inflated, although they are alot better now than they used to be before the humidorComment

Re: Derek Jeter
He's a lock in my book, but I don't think there are any guarantees that he reaches 3,000 hits playing with the Pirates. Less offensive potency equals less overall at-bats, and he would be relied upon to pick up more of the offense rather than just work along with it. Let's face it, Jeter gets pitched to well and he doesn't do too much at the plate, finding that 3.5 hole with regularity while understanding that the sacrifice of just moving a runner over will fit his role perfectly. If you force him to pull the ball and deliver more on offense, he (and any other player) would fail more often.
But he's still a Hall of Famer, no doubt about it.
But having said all that, I really have a hard time picturing him being the kind of guy who can be a HOFer as a guy who can carry a team on its back like youve seen from some greats in various circumstances. As I said previously, maybe he could be but thats a big assumption. But in the end, 3000 hits is 3000 hits. And it might be one of the harder ways to get into the HOF. Thats either 150 hits for 20 years or 200 hits for 15 years. Both of those are credible accomplishments.Last edited by RonnieG; 11-06-2010, 01:03 PM.Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
Valid points all around. But you could also say that he might have adapted to a different role on a different team. When youve been watching him be a top of the lineup guy for 15 years, its easy to say "thats what he is", but its possible he might have developed differently if the situation dictated. But thats an assumption either way. I actually think him finding utility as a top of the lineup guy and adapting to that is a credit to him.

I dont get the whole not playing for the Yankees thing, you cant change history. This is like saying Michael Jordan wouldnt have been a hall of famer had he been playing for the Trail-Blazers. How would you even know?Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
So Jeter's only getting into the Hall of Fame because of the 3000 hits? He has done nothing else in his career to be a Hall of Famer?

Re: Derek Jeter
I would really encourage you to go back and read my previous posts in this thread. If you do that and still have that same question, Ill try to re-answer or clarify this. I just feel that a lot of the reasoning youre asking about has been covered already.Comment

Re: Derek Jeter
Im pretty sure Jeter stays a Yankee. But I believe he should do the Yankees a favor and take a huge pay cut. Let them free up monies for other younger players. I mean he just finish making over a $100 MILLION. Let them have a chance at getting guys like Lee, Crawford and Werth.MLB: New York Mets

Re: Derek Jeter
Personally, I can't stand Saint Jeter, but really? People are debating whether he's a HOF'er? Really? And some are using the 3000 hits argument? You guys know that next season Derek Jeter (barring injury) is going to become the FIRST shortstop to reach 3000 hits, right?Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. We should have believed him.Originally posted by slickdtcDrJones brings the stinky cheese is what we've all learned from this debacle.Originally posted by Kipnis22yes your fantasy world when your proven wrong about 95% of your postComment

Met fan.
There is NO WAY that Jeter isn't a Hall of Fame player. No way.
All of the reasons listed above, plus he's been class from day one.
Name me one team that would look back on Jeter's career and say they wouldn't have taken that as their SS every year for the last 15+ years.
M.K.
Knight165I agree Jeter is HOF and with 3,000 hits he will be a lock, but I think he would have been a lock either way. Oh yeah Giants fan here. Oh correction 2010 World Series Champions Giants fan here. See knight I can play too.
