Justin Upton are you ******* kidding me?!?!?! He just put one on the top deck of the Western Metal Supply Co. at Petco! His second bomb of the night. Oh my gosh! They showed a replay from the ground behind home plate and Larry Bowa on MLB Tonight said it best, "It looked like a tee shot".

Is the runner somehow "less out" due to it being a lousy tag?

Does the lack of a textbook tag make a miserable call less miserable?

Shouldnt you actually have to tag someone and as how you say not "sweep the leg"

If a pitcher hitting a uniform is considered a hit batter, then I would say yes, uniform is part of the person. Besides how often could an ump tell if a uniform was tagged versus the body?

I completely agree. I just don't know how MLB rules it

Unless he completely missed the tag in an obvious manner, I think the safe bet is to just call him out. If I was the one umpiring the game, I would have called him out because the throw beat him by so much and the tag was there in plenty of time. Bad calls are a part of the game, but situational replay would be beneficial and save a lot of potential headaches for umpires. Even if it was only instituted for extra innings/game ending situations.

He clearly tagged him on the leg, no matter what kind of tag he used. Should he have just held his glove there to make it very obvious? Yes. But, he didn't and he still tagged him on the leg. In a case like this, the ump would have had a split second to see it miss his leg. Yes, it was a poorly used tag, but this was a play where the catcher should have benefit of the doubt unless there was very obvious evidence he missed. Meals made the call way too quickly, and that's what made me think that he just wanted to get out of there.

No one has mentioned the fact there was only one out and there was an easy opportunity for a double play to end the inning. He was more than likely trying to get a quick tag down so he could throw to first to get the double play. Granted, I'm sure he didn't notice that the pitcher had fallen flat on his face, but I could almost guarantee that he was looking ahead as he tagged him at the plate.

Tigers v Angels has been pretty exciting. 7-6 Halos in the 5th. (probly later but my online feed is usually on a delay)
