Yes, it was a poorly used tag, but this was a play where the catcher should have benefit of the doubt unless there was very obvious evidence he missed. Meals made the call way too quickly, and that's what made me think that he just wanted to get out of there.

No one has mentioned the fact there was only one out and there was an easy opportunity for a double play to end the inning. He was more than likely trying to get a quick tag down so he could throw to first to get the double play.
Granted, I'm sure he didn't notice that the pitcher had fallen flat on his face, but I could almost guarantee that he was looking ahead as he tagged him at the plate.
Looks more to me like he was making sure the guy running to 2nd couldn't get to third based on the fact that he turned back to third base before realizing lugo was called safe.

And at full speed, it really didn't look like he tagged him. Even at slow speed it's tough to tell but at full speed, u can't really blame the guy had he called him safe or out.

To add onto what That Guy said, I'm glad the umpire called it the way he did. I also liked what he had to say after the game. It's easy for us to make the call after seeing all of the different angles and slo-mo but he didn't have those. No matter your stance on instant replay, it's not a part of the game at the moment and we must make due with what we do have.

I mean how many times do you see umpires call a guy out just because the throw beat him even if he missed the tag?

I personally don't think he tagged him. And I don't understand how many of you can say this call was so atrocious. If it was so cut and dry why are there many people in this thread that don't think he tagged him.

That's what is intriguing about the whole discussion. Some are saying "he clearly made the tag, end of story" and yet others say "I'm not so sure he actually tagged him". I don't really think there is anything else to add though, and probly better to just move on to the next topic at this point.

Gotta love the pitcher and catcher arguing during a game.

                Won me over there.

...well no, not really. He has to show more before I start to think of him as a nice addition to the squad, but a good start none the less.

He was my favorite Cub before he was traded It still hurts even though he didn't really pan out.

I'm so sick of Nate McLouth's face. I can't wait til this season is over and he winds up on someone else's bench/AAA team next year.

Hopefully he'll do well with us. I'd love to see that we get some kind of production out of him, since we gave up quite a bit of that in Rasmus.

If he's anything like the player he was in Chicago, he's a good fielder and has good speed and can slap some hits around every once in awhile.

And I'd gladly take Pujols in return for Patterson

No! You're not getting him! I'll die if he goes into free agency.

Though if we do lose him, I believe we can still contend. Sure, his combination of offense and defense cannot be replicated, but we have some other players capable of scoring a bunch of runs. The one player whose loss would seriously ruin the Cardinals for me is Yadi. His ability as a defensive catcher and a pitch-caller is something I think keeps us going. Just watching today's game you can see it. No Yadi, defense looks horrible, we're losing.

Very Very sloppy play tonight...sad thing is, the best part of tonight was the bullpen..We really miss The Puma bat..Garcia didn't have it tonight and I think Tony stayed with him to long...3 injuries tonight, and also looks like Freese is hurt also, he just doesn't look right..Just have a feeling that we're going to star tto slow down a bit..we have to sweep the Cubs
