    .320 32 HRs 105 RBIs 28 SBs

    3 weeks to go.

Looks like an MVP to me no?

I'll let snepp add all the fancy stats.

Just for fun, I'll counter with:

      .335 26 HR 94 RBI 31 SB

And he plays for a winning team, which shouldn't decide the award, but is a pretty decent tiebreaker.

Again, though, I have no idea if the Metrics will be as similar.

The fancy ones like him a lot too.

Both MVP races have a mess of high quality candidates. I'm glad I don't have to vote (and then explain it later).

And you can surely flip that and say to yourself how he still has the drive to come and play his heart out everyday in games that "don't matter."

            Re: NL MVP Race

The Verlander for MVP talk in the AL MVP thread has me thinking about Halladay's chances for NL MVP.

What if Halladay posted one of the better pitching seasons in recent memory and no one noticed?

            2011 Roy Halladay: 2.12 FIP
            2000 Pedro Martinez: 2.17 FIP
            2004 Randy Johnson: 2.30 FIP
            2009 Zach Greinke: 2.33 FIP

            Going a bit further:

            1997 Roger Clemens: 2.25 FIP
            1995 Greg Maddux: 2.26 FIP
            1994 Greg Maddux: 2.39 FIP

Halladay has the third lowest FIP of the past 2 decades (behind 1995 Randy Johnson and 1999 Pedro) and he's so far posted the 11th highest K/BB ratio of the post-deadball era.

Granted, FIP certainly has its flaws - flukish HR/FB rates are a red flag and Halladay is giving up fewer HRs than usual - and Halladay isn't annihilating his competition ala 1999 Pedro, but if Verlander is a relatively serious candidate for AL MVP, Halladay should absolutely draw some votes. It's not as if the NL has a Jose Bautista-type player this year.

FIP also doesn't take ballpark and era differences into account.

League-average ERA in the NL, 2011 season: 3.83
League-average ERA in the AL, 2000 season: 4.91

              No disrespect to Doc, but Pedro's 1999 & 2000 seasons were awe-inspiring.

You're absolutely right. I failed to look at the minus stats, but they don't necessarily tell a different story. He's still right there with '94-'95 Maddux/'97 Clemens/'09 Greinke and ballpark with '95/'01/'04 Johnson/2000 Pedro in FIP-.

I still think he deserves a few MVP votes.

I think Kemp deserves it and I think Felix Hernandez last year changed the way writers vote for award winners. Braun finishes a close 2nd. However if they want to take the easy route, make them co-MVPs.

The homer in me says Braun. Even Fielder has said Braun has hit the dramatic HR's.

                        It could be Kemp too.

If you account for positional scarcity, defense, and park, I'll take Kemp.

Since I'm too cool for position players, I choose Halladay.

Kemp who almost won the triple crown, but I dont think it will go to him cause the Dodgers suck. I also like Upton for the MVP. He will probably get it.

Why exactly, would he "probably" get it?
