Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
WHAT. A. JOKE.
I know how Anthopoulos operates and I think for the most part his idea of not giving details etc etc is a sound one but calling a conference call just to say in effect "no comment" is total BS. He decided to do the conference call as he ws getting inundated with calls about the bidding but to go on a conference call and say "we don't make comments on what we do in regards to signing players/negotiations" is pointless. He even went so far as to intimate that the Jays may not even have put in a bid at all!
I think this is where Anthopoulos' "Cone of Silence" attitude has come back to bite him HARD. The lines burned up with PO'ed fans all day on The FAN and I don't blame 'em. If I were AA I'd have at least said that they made a bid. you don't have to give out the exact details.
Just a terrible PR move all the way around.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
With Wilson you know what you're getting.
Like I said, I've seen this movie before when it comes to Japanese pitchers. It's a pretty large risk to say the least.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
I wouldn't pay for either of them...I'm not high on Wilson and do not like paying out the nose for Darvish. Out of every Japanese pitcher who has come over, I can only think of three who did anything (a guy for the Giants in the 1960's, Nomo, and Dice K). The rest were duds and even the guys who did stuff broke down quickly."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Darvish would have Greg Maddux working with him. That's a nice, nice thing.Comment

That's a damn good thing there. Darvish will be learning from a master. I think Darvish's stuff from what i've seen would translate well if he gets the Maddux Treatment by the umps. Of course he'll have to earn it.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
The Rangers have invested in scouting pretty heavily over the past few years, and they know what they are getting with this pitcher. Just because there are a few names from the past that bombed doesn't mean that all Japanese pitchers are rotten. There's risk in every move that a team makes, the Rangers are making sure that risk is minimal.
By the way bkrich83, Maury Brown of Baseball Prospectus is reporting that the Rangers' deal with Fox Sports is likely near the range of $$3 billion. I'm not a subscriber so I can't read all of the report, but he believes the $$1.5 billion report was about the barebones contract. Just something interesting that I found...Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Not only that, but Nolan Ryan still works with the pitching staff. It's nice to have these names in the teaching and coaching department.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Here's a section of the Maury Brown article regarding the Rangers TV deal.
When it was reached shortly after Nolan Ryan and former owner Chuck Greenberg won the auction for the club, it was reported that the 20-year deal was worth $3 billion. And then, for some reason, that changed to between $1.5-$1.6 billion, which has now circulated about enough to become “fact.”
But, in speaking with two sources that were close to the negotiations on the television deal yesterday, they say that the original figure of $3 billion is closer to the truth… and possibly then some (the sources would not elaborate as to the total but said that based upon certain escalators in the deal, the package could be worth more).
So it turns out that the TV deal could end up being more than $3B. Wow.Comment

That doesn't sound any more concrete than the first report. The way baseball owners protect their finances we may never know. 3B sounds dubious for that market.Comment
