Re: The Hot Stove League Thread

I hate this bidding crap, and I hate even more that the Cubs even put in a bid for Darvish.

I'm on the "he'll be a bust" train.

    I just don't see it.

People seem to forget Dice-K was pretty good. Helped them win a WS.

I get the Dice-K Comparisons, I just don't see it. I refer to scouts when it comes to these things(International players) He's projected as #1 or #2 type SP.

I'd put a bid for him, I just hope the Cubs weren't the team that put a skyhigh bid that's being reported as much as I like him.

I think Yu will be legit. His stuff is better than Dice-K's ever was and his stats are better than Dice-K's were in Japan. Not to mention he has much better command.

Same here, he pretty much dominated the NPB. Last year he had a down year and his numbers were still ridiculous compared to others. But I think he won't live up to the hype when it comes to the contract he's getting. He won't be a number one starter, at best he's a number two.

I think Darvish will be at the least be a solid innings eating 3rd starter. That will be good in the Jays case since they have 2 solid starters at the top of the rotation. Anyways, according to the NY Post the Jays posted the highest bid between 40 and 50 million.

Really....They should spend this crazy money on Prince Fielder IMO.

Totally agree with you, if they're going to be spending crazy amounts of money, might as well go with the sure thing. With Prince, you know what you're going to get.

Just have a feeling Darvish will be a bust, Hopefully the reports are wrong and the jays aren't the highest bid.

Angels sign new TV deal. Triples their current TV revenue.

Gives them almost twice as much as Rangers yearly.

Maybe for now, but the Rangers deal is 20/3B starting in 2014. Looks to be about the same deal to me.

The Brewers new TV deal kicked in this year, too.

They go from 10 mil in revenue to 30 mil.

It'd be great to get fielder, but wouldn't you rather get a pitcher than another bat? Jays were top 10 in runs scored. Other than batting average, nothing else really needs to be improved offensively.

Pitching wise, the Jays were at least 20th in most major categories.

A top 10 offensive team and bottom 10 pitching team means that the team should be focusing on pitching.

Well earlier in the offseason I was hoping the Jays would go after Buehrle but they didn't really. I do think the rumors of a Gio Gonzalez deal makes sense and he'd be a great fit in Toronto. I guess we'll see what happens. Mike Wilner wrote a blog shortly after the Ben Francisco trade and said that it looks like all these LFs on the roster are going to end up being a part of some trade for pitching or a middle of the order bat. So we'll see what happens there. In a perfect world it'd be awesome to get Darvish AND Fielder but I doubt that happens.

The Rangers deal with Fox Sports Southwest that starts in 2014 is actually $1.6 billion over 20 years. The Initial reports of it being $3 billion as it turns out were inflated.

Japan has some good players but they do not compare. The league has thrown over only one legitimate star in Ichiro Suzuki and a quality bat in Hideki Matsui.

The pitchers have a good start (Nomo and Dice-K) and then flatline. Kaz Matsui was a really good role player and nothing more.

For the money Yu will earn, he needs to be a bonafide ace. You can say that's asking for too much but I disagree. You don't give someone what can amount to about $15 MM per year to just be okay.

Agreed. When it comes to Japanese pitchers we've seen this movie before.

While Keri says the $3B number was erroneous, Bob Nightengale has been saying that the people that he's talked to that were involved in the negotiations are still saying it's worth $3B. I'm not sure anybody knows.
