I have this feeling that Yu is going to be a bust.

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
He does have a slight frame from what I remember but so did Pedro and unlike most of the Japanese players that have come to North America he's still young so the adjustment process won't be TOO bad. I think it all depends on where he goes to and the structure in place in terms of making him comfortable/actual coaching.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I think he's a bust because MLB filler have dominated in Japan.
Japan has some good players but they do not compare. The league has thrown over only one legitimate star in Ichiro Suzuki and a quality bat in Hideki Matsui.
The pitchers have a good start (Nomo and Dice-K) and then flatline. Kaz Matsui was a really good role player and nothing more.
For the money Yu will earn, he needs to be a bonafide ace. You can say that's asking for too much but I disagree. You don't give someone what can amount to about $15 MM per year to just be okay.

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
I value what people like Jon Danials and Company say, and from what they've witnessed and scouted, it sounds like Yu is the real deal when it comes to aces. Japan may be like advanced AAA, but Darvish has the skills to put movement on the ball and to mix his pitches effectively. I feel that with help from people like Ryan and the Maddux brothers, he could become a potent weapon here in Texas.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

I see Darvish turning out to be a slightly better Dice-K when all is said and done.Browns

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
It would be nice if Japan could supply their 3rd superstar to the MLB, but I don't see that happening. Baseball was going on the same tirade about Dice K coming over, look how that has turned out. There are much better players to look at south of the US instead of west.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
So you're all going off of a few players, specifically Dice-K? Hmm... kind of a small sample size, don't you think?
Listen, I know there are a bunch of weak knees, but the scouts that have been watching him all year from Texas have a high opinion on him. These are the same scouts that are rebuilding the team from the ground up. To label him a bust at this time is nothing less than short sightedness.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

That was a bit over the top on my part. My bad. I just can't buy into Japanese imports (especially pitchers) becoming superstars in the MLB because it's never worked out in the past.Browns
