The Rangers have invested in scouting pretty heavily over the past few years, and they know what they are getting with this pitcher. Just because there are a few names from the past that bombed doesn't mean that all Japanese pitchers are rotten. There's risk in every move that a team makes, the Rangers are making sure that risk is minimal.

By the way bkrich83, Maury Brown of Baseball Prospectus is reporting that the Rangers' deal with Fox Sports is likely near the range of $$3 billion. I'm not a subscriber so I can't read all of the report, but he believes the $$1.5 billion report was about the barebones contract. Just something interesting that I found...
He better be better than Wilson he's going to cost nearly twice as much.

Rox signed Casey Blake to 1 year deal.

Also I'm not in favor for paying about 100M+ for Japanese pitchers. They have to learn new language, culture, etc and has to work on pitching at the same time? Tough task.

One thing I didn't know about NPB...the balls are not only different than MLB's, but each team makes their own.

It might be a cause for concern, but I still think Darvish is going to be a star and I really don't get the Dice-K comparisons. His stuff is better, he throws harder, he doesn't appear to have missed any significant time, and his control is infinitely better than Dice-K's.

Come on Mariners... Watching the Angels and Rangers throw around all this money while you guys add John Jaso and George Sherrill is a bit uh... Disheartening.

They changed to a single baseball supplier prior to last season.

Yup and they started using balls that are similar to MLB's. NPB's offensive numbers were down big time.

After how Wilson performed in the playoffs, he'll be an upgrade.

9th largest according to BA. And 1/3 rd the size of the LA/Anaheim market.

You may be right. But how can you say this with any certainty? He's never thrown a pitch in the majors. There are no 6 man rotations here and major league hitters are much more disciplined in the strike zone than in NPB from what I have read.

I know everything the Rangers do is the greatest, but this guy hasn't done anything yet to merit him as being an upgrade over anyone.
