Hampton actually had an amazing first half of the season for the Rockies in 2000, but then fell apart. He was an All Star that year, just was special to start the year off.
Fell off the face of the planet though, I think he was 9-2 with an ERA in the 2.00's at one point that year, finished 14-13 with an ERA over 5.00.
Next year, even worse and he was gone. He just never would have long term sustainability in Colorado with the way he pitches.

I remember Dreifort's contract being really big at the time for pitchers. I thought he'd stick as a solid #3 pitcher, but his contract paid him like an ace.

As for Soriano, yeah I never understood his deal he got. Good player, great hitter as a 2B, but as an OF that moves to above-average-ish.

Now Andruw Jones, that was a terrible signing. Also, Andruw is a perfect example of how a guy can lose it so fast. 51 homeruns, 41 homeruns, and then 26 and never topping 20 again. I just don't see how you can get a guy $14,000,000 coming off a season where he played 154 games, hit .222 with 26 homeruns, OBP of .311 and an OPS of .724.

The Mets Bobby Bonilla deal was horrible. They at least got a great season in 1993 where Bonilla was an All-Star and hit 34 HRs, but the mets are still paying a deffered salary; starting on July 1, 2011, Bobby Bonilla will remain on the franchise's payroll for 25 years, collecting an annual salary of $1,193,248.20.

I think it is safe to say Alfonso Soriano has not been the worst FA signing ever. LoL.

Yep. He would rank up there as well. 4 Years 39.95 mill. Not as bad as what Jason Schmidt was but only 8 mill or so shy from being worse.

Not even close its a 1 year deal, didn't work out but you're already off the hook with him after this season or can probably bring him back quite a bit cheaper.

Zito gets my vote, for the money they're paying he is terrible.

Not quite as high dollar as some of the others, but I'll throw Jose Guillen out there. $12 million per year was/is a ton of money for the Royals. Think it's the second highest single season total in Royals history (Behind Gil Meche at $12.4 million), and the most expensive contract the Royals have handed out in per year value.

Gary Matthews Jr. anybody? I don't think he was the worst...but he at least deserves mention here. Angels gave him 5 years, 50 million and he never produced anything even close to what that money demanded he should.

                          Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?

The ones that came to my mind:

                          Denny Neagle
                          Mike Hampton
                          Richie Sexson
                          Carl Pavano
                          Gil Meche
                          Barry Zito
                          David Segui

I was contemplating adding Adrian Beltre's Mariners contract to the list, but it's becoming apparent that Safeco Field was the reason for his dip in prodcution.

Wait till Pujols comes on this list I keed.

I can't remember if Jason Bay was a FA signing or not, but if he was, he's like a 5 year/$75 mil deal with the Mets, and has produced 21 HR and 109 RBI with them. Even in one season, those totals (which have been produced since the beginning of the '10 season) are hardly satisfying even for his average salary/year at $15 mil. This all wouldn't be so bad if his OBP with them wasn't .335, but it is, so...
