Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Yeah I would have to say it was the Milton Bradley signing. Soriano while his contract is terrible was one of the key players in 2007 and 2008 in helping the Cubs win back to back central division titles, the first time they had done so in 100 years and finished tied with Tampa Bay for the best record in baseball in 08 at 97-64. Take away his .299 average 33 hr 70 RBI in 07 and .280, 29, and 75 in 08 and the Cubs probably don't win the division those years.“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Unless Jason Bay makes a sudden explosion out of nowhere I'd say he's MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than Soriano. Bay has offered totally zip since coming to the team. In fact the Mets were better while he was on the DL. He's a whopping 0-13 since coming from the DL. IF Oliver Perez was a FA signing he would beat everyone by a mile, but sadly I don't think that was the case. I've never seen a player get benched and refuse to move to the minors. He just sat in the pen with a dumb look on his face.Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Actually I just checked and Oliver Perez was a free agent signing. Considering how much they paid him and what he did I'm tossing him in as one of the worst ever easily.Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Wasn't Hampton signed until 2008 and stopped playing because of injuries around 2005? I remember him getting paid for years without playing because he kept getting injured in rehab stints. Kind of like Allan Houston with the Knicks.Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
I have to go with Mike Hampton. He got an 8 year 121 Million Dollar deal. That is over 15 mill / season. Stats during contract: 56-52 4.81ERA
Carl Pavano was pretty bad as well. 4 years 39.95 Mill to go 9-8 with a 5.00 ERA..
However then you also have to consider this deal..
Kei Igawa. Sure his contract is a manageable 5 year 20 million dollar deal. But don't forget to add on the 26 Million dollar fee the yankees paid to sign him. All for his 2-4 6.66ERA in 13 games started. 5 years at 46 million to get those stats is god awful. I still don't understand why teams have to pay to negotiate deals with these players from Asian countries?Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Oh I just ran across another terrible contract .. Russ Ortiz (now that I think about it he may have been mentioned earlier). Here are some of the details.
4 years, $33 Million
Stats During Contract: 28 GS, 5-16, 7.00 ERA, 64 ERA+, 67 Ks, 137.2 IP
"After starting the year 0-5 with a 7.54 ERA in six starts, the Diamondbacks cut Ortiz with $22 million left on his contract in what is one of the most expensive buyouts in baseball history."
So essentially he was paid $33 Million dollars to pitch about 3/4 of a season and lose 16 games. Not to bad Mr. Ortiz.. Not to bad at all.Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Because they are basically "restricted" free agents since their teams in their native countries have the "rights" to them. Since they are in two different leagues (MLB and Nippon) they cannot compensate them with other players and/or draft picks so cash is what has to do.Comment

Re: Soriano...worst FA ever?
Braves had two really bad ones in the mid-80's with Bruce Sutter and Nick Esasky. When Sutter signed his contract it made him the highest paid player in baseball and in three years in Atlanta his ERA was never below 4.00 during the pre-steroid era. Nick Esasky hit 30 homers for the Red Sox and signed a big deal at the time with the Braves. He played 9 games in three years due to vertigo.- LETS GO RED SOX!!!
