The one tricky aspect to working out a trade is that players can only be traded for other players who have cleared waivers or are not on a team’s 40-man roster.
I don't think this deal will have a waiver hiccup if both teams have agreed to it as you posted.. The Dodgers already were awarded waiver claims on Beckett and A-Gon and I believe Crawford and Punto have cleared waivers no?
The only thing I could see is if a team claims Sands on waivers (since he is on the 40 man of the Dodgers.) De La Rosa didn't clear waivers and was pulled back by LA. However based on something that I read on Sporting News, I think that could be worked around.
Originally posted by LA Times(De La Rosa) now could end up as a "player to be named later" in a trade with the Red Sox for Gonzalez.

Re: Dodgers-Red Sox mega deal
Teams usually put the entire team on waivers at some point looking to see if anyone wants to make a deal where they can dump salary.
Usually teams have already put the players through waivers before the trade is announced though. If they haven't cleared yet, then anyone can block the trade. Teams also have a gentleman's agreement not to block other teams trades, but it can still happen.Comment

Re: Dodgers-Red Sox mega deal
Sox fan here, my take on this blockbuster deal(still pending, but what the heck, I need to get this off my chest).
First of all, Mr. Cherington, or whoever orchestrated this deal. Thank you. Maybe this front office is not as stubborn as we thought. Now the deal:
Dodgers:
Gonzalez - Good, regardless of how much HRs he has this season, this man is one of the best pure hitters in the game, maybe a change of scenery(or rather return to the scenery he was used to in LA) away from the microscope that he was constantly under this year in Boston will be a good thing. He'll add more thunder to the Dodgers lineup for sure, although it should be noted that he is a .210 career hitter at Dodgers Stadium. Defense wise, this man is a Gold Glover.
Crawford - Could go either way. Depends on how he performs next year after TJ. Like Gonzalez, the change of scenery helps. Although at best, the Dodgers are getting a .280 slap hitter with ok power, weak arm with decent glove and an aging speed merchant.
Beckett - Bad. Dodgers fans are saying he'll be better than Blanton, they're confident that he'll be an 2012 AJ Burnett. We won't know yet, but, us Sox fans that have been seeing/listening to Sox games, we won't be missing Beckett anytime soon.
Punto - WHAT?!?!? THE LEGENDARY NICK PUNTO?? NOOOO. Ok, just kidding. Makes little sense to Dodgers, probably was a throw-in for lol's, he has a decent glove and plays good defense though.
Red Sox:
(Need to read up to these guys' scouting reports)
Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster - Very good. De La Rosa throws around 99-100mph, although a year removed from TJ. Allen Webster is the Dodgers #2 best prospect. Both are projected to be studs.
Ivan De Jesus Jr and Jerry Sands - Good. De Jesus is a career .297 hitter in 8 minor league seasons, although injuries have slowed him down some what. Sands was a 25th rd pick and has blossomed into a pretty good power hitter.
James Loney - OK. Sox obviously needed a 1B in return to fill in after Gonzo. Has tremendously underachieved, let's see if our hitting coach Dave Magadan can sort him out.
Winner in this deal : Dodgers, this year and next year. However, Red Sox in the future. I'm sure Dodger fans are ecstatic that they are getting a major upgrade at 1B and an exciting player in Crawford. Helps your lineup for sure, but will you have enough pitching for playoffs? As for Beckett, well, he's been known for pitching well in odd number years. However, I think this move will hurt Dodgers in the future, I hope you guys don't mind gutting your farm and paying Crawford and Gonzalez 20M each when they're 35, 36, not gonna even mention Beckett. For us, this move restocks our farm system, which definitely helps us rebuild for the future and indirectly shows that players don't run this asylum, that front office are willing to shake things up.
Well that's my 2 cents.Last edited by MostlyChilly; 08-24-2012, 09:00 PM.Comment

Two things....
1) Don't put too much hope in Jerry Sands "showing" that power in the majors. He's got good pop in the minors, but his bat wasn't able to solidify his every day spot in left field even though the Dodgers haven't had a consistent left fielder in two years (since Manny)
2) The Dodgers need Beckett to be better than Blanton. Do you not think he's a +3 game improvement over Blanton?
While I hate the contracts...the Dodgers (once again THIS season) picked up players that are better than the guy they are replacing at all 3 positions.
Crawford....Victorino...maybe a wash...but if Crawford can heal...Crawford is the better player.
Gonzalez > Loney
Beckett > Blanton
Man...Dodgers still have to give Kershaw at least 18 million per........Fulham FC...Showin' em love.

Now with Beckett and Blanton, I've seen Blanton's stats, he's actually been worse than Beckett, however, off the field wise, Blanton is nowhere as big of a headache as Beckett, who's making twice as much as him. Beckett's also losing velocity off his fastball(topping 93 mph this year), he's gonna need to reinvent himself in LA, he's no longer a power pitcher.
And you're certainly upgrading with Crawford over Victorino next year for sure, I actually liked him in Boston, great locker room guy, hopefully he recovers and somewhat lives up to the 20M he makes per year.
Looks like you guys are going all in for this year, good luck in the playoffs.Comment

Re: Dodgers-Red Sox mega deal
Great, great trade for the Red Sox especially if they don't have to pick up any salary, if they're not giving any money back quite frankly it's quite possibly a top 10 sports trade all time for the Red Sox. Anyone else thinks the Dodgers have been overwhelmingly stupid with how they're spent their money the past couple of months(Ethier, Hanley, Beckett and Crawford for something like 70 million), major ouch for the Dodgers and their fans in my opinion.Comment

Courtesy of MLBTradeRumors...
10:01pm: The Dodgers are expected to pick up more than $260MM of the $271.5MM in combined salary that the Red Sox are sending to them, a source tells Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.Last edited by MostlyChilly; 08-24-2012, 09:16 PM.Comment

Re: Dodgers-Red Sox mega deal
Uh oh. Supposedly Crawford has a 3 team no trade clause and the Dodgers are 1 of them.
Per Jon Heyman he has yet to be asked about it."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." SidVish"I thought LeBron James was just going to be another addition to help me score."
