I don't see the Reds or anyone, beating healthy Dodgers pitching. Early prediction has to go to them.

Wonder how many people that had the Yanks in 1st or 2nd wish they had dropped them a spot or two now that the Yankees have lost another player.

              Re: Official 2013 Predictions Thread

Maybe I've read too many fluff pieces over the past few weeks, but I don't see why the Red Sox cannot be a contender in the AL East, especially now that Granderson, AROD and Texiera will not be starting at all during the month of April.

The Red Sox bullpen has improved with the addition of two consistent relief men and we have more depth on defense opposed to last year.

I think a lot of people forget how plagued we were with injuries in 2012 and pay attention exclusively to the W/L category.

The worst thing you can point out about the team is the lack thereof consistent starting pitching, which I believe will be improved with the addition of former pitching coach John Ferrell.

              AL:
              Blue Jays
              Angels
              Tigers
              Royals(WC1)
              Sox (WC2)

              NL:
              Reds
              Nationals
              Dodgers
              Braves (WC1)
              Cardinals (WC2)

                Re: Official 2013 Predictions Thread

The Yankees' injuries aren't going to make Boston significantly better, that's why few have them as a contender. Baltimore and Tampa are still above-.500 teams. Toronto I'm assuming (hoping really) will be vastly better than the 73 wins they had last year. Boston may have had injuries, but they also traded away half of their team. A lot has to go right for them to go from dead last in the East and within games of last in the AL to a wildcard contender where 90+ wins is probably a requirement.

The Yankees dropping and Boston recovering from injuries aren't going to account for 20-25 wins, unless Baltimore's luck goes up I-95. If they were in the Central division, that would be another story. They are going to win more than 70 games. They are going to be around, but I, and many others, don't see them winning the 90-95+ games that are necessary to contend.

I agree, a weak Yankee line up is not going to make Boston a better team, but it gives them the opportunity to take some games from them early in the season.

Call me crazy, but I think the Sox have potential for 80+ games which could be enough for the 2nd Wildcard position (depending on how competitive the AL turns out). The red sox don't need an unbelieveable offense, they just need quality starts from their starting pitching. You see guys like Ellsbury and Bailey who were out a lot of the year, they are bound to play to their potential. A full year with Middlebrooks would help the lineup as well.

I think you are putting too much of the little bit of success we had last year, on Gonzalez and Ross shoulders. We did not become a significantly worse hitting team with their removals.

Lackey is back and reported healthy, that has likely to be known.. Yet we have a rotation this year that can easily exceed the production of last year.

His point (which I agree with) is that 80+ wins isn't going to cut it. There will be at least one 90+ winning team that gets left out imo.

Exactly. Houston in now in the AL West, which leads me to believe that we could possibly have 3 AL West Playoff teams. Especially with the Yanks potentially getting off to a slow start with all their injuries

The Sox would be lucky to make the playoffs with 85-90 wins (which is mighty generous for them considering all the "ifs" it would take for them to get there) imo. I think the 2nd Wild Card winner has at least 92 wins this year.

Yep. Exactly what I was saying. 70+ is a given. 80+ is likely depending on how the season goes and the O's, Rays, and Blue Jays play. But a .500 season does not get you into the playoffs in the AL. 85 wins would need a lot of help. 90 is what you want, and like I said, 22 wins takes a lot, even if it is Boston. And 90 may not even cut it.

In all honesty, I could see every AL East team this year finishing over .500. It's gonna be a great race. Still haven't decided on who'll take that division this year yet.

Though I'm hoping the Rays don't succumb to the Nationals, obviously haha. Like their matchups against their opponents though! And I do hope the Yanks finish bottom of the AL East, though I suspect they will do it over .500.
