Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
In the aftermath of two home plate collisions in the American League Championship Series on Thursday, officials from other teams reiterated that they expect the topic of banning that play to be raised again in meetings this winter.
Say it ain't so, if this goes through, it's really gonna piss me off.Comment

"At this point, I don't know who would argue to keep it, or what their argument would be," said one team official who believes general managers will address the topic at their meetings next month. "There is no reasoned argument to keep it [in the game]."
Sick of this CRAP. They're ****ing ruining every sport with this ****.Comment

No collisions gives catchers an excuse to pounce their meaty, armored bodies on players. Just as many injuries can occur for runners now.
Just make it a "defenseless receiver" kind of rule. If the catcher sets up, then collisions should always be okay.

I expect to see a lot of players trying to run around and jump over catchers etc etc. Once we see a prominent player injured in that fashion well you might as well not send a runner over from 3rd base on crucial situations anymore.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
It will be like every other level of baseball down through high school where ramming the catcher is already illegal.
The catcher will still be able to block the plate to the degree of putting his shin guard on the ground and laying it flat to the degree where the runner literally has nowhere to slide whatsoever.Comment

@RapSheet Correct. Access to the plate guaranteed, as with first base.

@TrapahoIic Catcher won't be able to block the plate when they change the rule.

@lsuemilie Catcher wouldn't be allowed to plant themselves in front of plate; runners would have access to plate, as w/ all amateur levels.badComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
I played through college with this very same rule. So many runners get hurt sliding into the catcher and never saw a catcher get hurt.
No, catchers were never allowed to block the plate in the sense that they can croutch in front of it preparing for a hit, but they can and will position themselves on the first base side with their leg on the ground blocking the plate so the runner with either have to hook slide or slide through them.
And no, they won't be risking injury by doing that because they are the one's wearing shin pads. The runner would be risking injury to their leg or ankle if they decided to try and slide through it.
This technique is the very reason runners have always been allowed to plow the catcher to begin with.
My only point is that it isn't going to be treated anywhere near the way first base is for the obvious reason that first is always a force.
Even as second there are times where you will see a brave shortstop or second baseman but his leg down to block the path to the base in order to risk getting spiked to get the out.
Personally I'm torn, I'm not nearly as angry about it as you guys because I've always seen it as the runners need to make a good decision going home just like they need to do going to any other base.
You can't jar the ball out intentionally going to any of the other three bases (remember the crap Arod took for doing that going to first lol) so why should home be different?
But at the same time, I don't like the advantage the catcher has being the one with the pads on.
It would be like a football coach doing and Oklahoma drill with one of his players in full pads.Comment

I'm just tired of the bitchification of sports. I'm all for safety, but at the same time, Life is never completely safe. You risk your body playing sports every day, and athletes are safer then they've ever been, there's been alot of progress in safety for athletes. But, now we are going too far, it's just getting ridiculous.Comment
