Neither dominated their position the way Sandberg did 2B.

    Travesty.

You're saying Eckersley didn't dominate? The man had a very good 5 yr peak as a starter then converted to a closer and not just any old closer. He practically invented the modern day closer role!

As for Molitor it's true he didn't dominate his position but he was always a very professional hitter and he was probably elected more on the strength of the 2nd half of his career. It's hard to believe that he would have had even better numbers if he wasn't so injury prone in the early years.

Let's put it this way: Neither would probably be considered the best in the history of the game at their position.

You could definitely make that case for Sandberg.

9 gold gloves is great and only one MVP in 1984, no World Series and only two trips to the post season. How about a .285 hitter with only 282 HR's and just over 1,000 RBI, hardly dominant in my book. Infact it looks an awful lot like the career of Steve Garvey, and he'll never see the Hall Of Fame. Sorry Cub fan, Sandberg was nothing special.

With Eck getting in, I hope this opens the door for the likes of Sutter and Gossage, and in the future maybe guys like Rivera and Hoffman will get the nod as well.
