The Cubs are waiting to see if their asking price will drop enough to grab one or both as a bargain - which now seems likely. There's obviously no rush as far as the the team is concerned. The free agents came to them, not the other way around.

Maddux, I-Rod reportedly want to go to the Cubs
AP is reporting that Greg Maddux and Ivan Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, has been talking with Cubs GM Jim Hendry about one or both going to the team. Boras says both want to go to Chicago, but the Cubs are reluctant to tie up all that free agent money while they are negotiating a long-term deal for Kerry Wood.

Well if the Cubs can get I-Rod at least then that will certainly sew up the division for them. I would love to see Madduz go back to Chicago just for sentimental reasons tho he may not fare too well in small old Wrigley at this stage in his career.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Maddux, I-Rod reportedly want to go to the Cubs
Conversely, I'd like to see Maddux in a Cubs uniform more than I would Pudge. Nothing against Pudge, nothing at all, it's just that they already have MICHAEL BARRET. Michael Barrett isn't a Catcher you use for backup, he just ISN'T. Pudge isn't a Catcher you half/half with, he just ISN'T. It would be kindof bad Chemistry if you ask me, and seeing a team with Wood, Clement, Prior, Maddux, and Zambrano, would be....well...a dream come true...
If they both somehow get signed and Kerry gets signed long term, it almost looks like the Cubs and Red Sox will meet up at the World Series anyways, just a year later than expected.
EDIT: Sorry about that, the site nearly froze on me in Mozilla YET AGAIN, and it ended up posting my post THREE TIMES.
Jeez...these newer versions of Mozilla are so much more faulty, it almost makes me want to go back to IE and all the popups.Comment

Re: Maddux, I-Rod reportedly want to go to the Cubs
I guess my question is if Maddux is really what they need.
I mean, their 1-4 starters are as good as any in baseball. Number 5 will either be Juan Cruz (electric stuff, no control) or Angel Guzman (24-5, 2.33, and a strikeout an inning in his career in the minors). Both are young guys with bright futures.
Would you really be improving your club enough to plunk down $10M on Maddux? Especially when you could use that $10M to sign some of your young players to longterm deals?Comment
