Re: Maddux, I-Rod reportedly want to go to the Cubs

I guess my question is if Maddux is really what they need.

I mean, their 1-4 starters are as good as any in baseball. Number 5 will either be Juan Cruz (electric stuff, no control) or Angel Guzman (24-5, 2.33, and a strikeout an inning in his career in the minors). Both are young guys with bright futures.

Would you really be improving your club enough to plunk down $10M on Maddux? Especially when you could use that $10M to sign some of your young players to longterm deals?

      Pudge, yes! Maddux, no!

Anybody notice what Pudge did for the Marlins last year? How many clutch hits did the guy have in the playoffs? Who had the game winning plays against the Giants, in San Fran no less? Take Pudge in a heart beat! Plus the fact that they got Lee at first will only help Pudge get used to his new team cause he'll have someone that he knows.

As far as Barrett? The Cubs had no reason to believe that Pudge would even consider playing for them. So they went out and found Barrett. And anybody that tells me they'd rather have Barrett than Pudge is smoking some good stuff. Just look at Barretts career stats: Stats Just take a look at the seasonal averages. 11 homers per 162 games, and a .253 career average? I'll take Pudge.

As far as Maddux, he's a first ballot HOF'er, no question there. But his numbers are declining. He gave up a career high in homers last year, 24. And his ERA also hit a new high, 3.96. And the Braves were pretty good last year and he had 11 losses. If he moves to Wrigley and the wind is blowing out, then i don't want him pitching. I just don't think he's worth the money. Stick with Cruz and Zambrano.

      That's my 2 cents

My worry with Pudge is that he will fall back into the malaise he was in the last year or so in Texas, maybe he needs to be playing on a winner. I would love to see Maddux come back, He would round out their rotation, with Cruz you would have 5 hard throwing right handers, it seems like a veteran who keeps people of balance might help the rotation more overall.

Re: Maddux, I-Rod reportedly want to go to the Cubs

I kinda see what you're saying about Pudge. But I live in the Arlington area and I've been to my fair share of ballgames and the Rangers were never a real contender for the playoffs. So I do see how he may need to be playing for a winner for him to produce.

But aren't the Cubs contenders? Who thought the Marlins were contenders last year? Plus Pudge came thru for his team when they had no expectations for making the playoffs.

Plus if Pudge has to play for a contender what other team is his option? Tigers? Orioles?

Plus why would Pudge goto any team in the AL? Who wants to fight for a playoff position with the Yankees and Red Sox in your league?

The Cubs make sense for him to me.

That's not my point at all. They SIGNED Barrett because he's a team player, he's Decent, he can get the job done, as far as Catchers go I'ddare you to name more than 3 that can hit more than 20 out of the park a year, but I'd be wasting my time. They SIGNED him to be their main catcher, and for all we know they might have made promises of him being their #1 catcher. My point is that compared to most Catchers, Barrett is MORE than decent, he can GET THE JOB DONE. Seeing that, they really don't NEED (now go look up the definition of this one because I know it can be hard to understand) Pudge at this point. Pudge needs the Cubs more than the Cubs need him. Get it? I'd LOVE to see Pudge on the team, but I'm also very wary of it. They don't need a catcher and now you're saying it's the best idea in the world for them to go out and get one of the best Catchers in the majors? It's like, when they signed Barrett I pretty much crossed off Catcher for things they needed, and now suddenly it's a top priority again? It just doesn't make sense to me. The two would be lights out, definitely, but it's really more of a DREAM TEAM idea to me than something that could actually happen, and something that would ACTUALLY be worthwhile, and make much of a difference. You know, the kind of Difference Maddux would bring. It doesn't matter if he's on the decline or not, he's Veteran and has been lights out for so many years that nobody should CARE that he's on the decline, it doesn't mean he's no longer any good. For a guy that could easily become the #4 or 5 starter, how and why would it matter if his talent is Declining? Not only would it give the Cubs top prospects a chance to fine tune their stuff in the Minors for one more year, not only would it make their Rotation prettymuch UNBEATABLE, not only would it completely signify them as a Playoff Contender before the Season even started no matter WHAT happened to the other teams in the off, but as someone already said, it would bring a definite edge of balance back to an already completely Solid pitching staff. Signing Maddux = GOOD, signing Pudge = NEEDLESS, not bad but NEEDLESS!!
