But the guy won the ROY in 2001. 2 time all star. 3 time top 5 in MVP voting, lead the league last year in avg, hits, runs, 2nd in OPS, etc...

look around, Greg Maddux has one at least 16 games for 15 consecutive seasons, and does not have a contract, Ivan Rodriguez, the best Catcher in the game, won a world series ring last year, does not have a contract, why?, money, there asking prices are too high, five years ago they could both have easily got, $70, $80, $90 Million from some teams,
things are changing, Pujols may someday be the best player in the game,
but even Barry Bonds found out that even a 73 HR season does not guarntee more money than your worth.

I would argue that with the other players mentioned (Maddux, Bonds, IRod) are all on the wrong side of 30 years old, thus no one is willing to give them longer than a 2 or 3 year contract (except for the Tigers who need players and names to bring in the fans). Assuming we all believe Pujol's birth certificate, the guy is only 24 years old and putting up monster numbers his first 3 years in the majors... and probably hasn't hit his peak yet. He's worth a long term, big bucks contract IMO. Not in the 20 mil/ year range (no one is stupid enough to do that anymore), but a 5-7 year, 14-17mil/year contract is probably what he's going to be offered either by the Cards or by some other team.

Re: Pujols wants his money...and he wants it NOW!!!

In 1994 Ken Griffey Jr., at the time was the best player in Baseball, he was also the highest payed player in Baseball, at $6.Million a season, fast forward 10 years, Griffey, now makes $17.Million per season, has missed most of the last 3 seasons, and has the Reds in a financial hole,
i don't think the Cardinals want to put themselves in that kind of situation,
a side note on why Pujols wants to break the bank now: he is one strong throw away from season ending elbow surgery, his elbow is tore up inside, hence the move to First Base, the team can't risk him playing the Outfield,
i have nothing against Pujols, but when you look at $55.Million and call it an insult, to me thats just arrogence, and that is what is ruining professional sports.

I think we all agree on the fact that Pujols needs to shut the f&*# up. Reading that article on ESPN kinda makes you think twice about rooting for a guy like this. I like to admire players that let their talent exhibit leadership and leave all the money [censored] to their agent - that's what he/she gets paid to do.

rsox made my points so no need to cover old ground (hmmm i'm finding rsox to be a pretty damn good baseball poster time to give him OS love with a rating)

Anyways what I wanted to say is that Pujols should just shut up. If he keeps crying about wanting big bucks then he's going to gain a bad reputation as a money grubbing greedy ballplayer. Yes he deserves a monster contract but as others have said the economy has changed.

The Guerrero signing is probably the kind of deal that Pujols should expect, maybe less but with incentives since STL is a mid-market club. It's these kind of signings and contracts that i'm looking at with great interest as it will partly determine what happens to Carlos Delgado in Toronto.

Re: Pujols wants his money...and he wants it NOW!!!

I don't think any pro player has the right to demand that kind of money, without admitting that he's only doing it because he has a big ego and has to feed it money. I think there hsould be player salary caps. Team can have as much payroll as it wants, but...players can only make so much...period. no one is worth 30 million dollars, not to play a game. To be loved by fans...[censored]...I could be the ROY and have multi MVP's and still would settle for a solid Million dollars...maybe even less. You just don't need that much money. Just because you got the money doesn't mean you need to live like the [censored] queen of england. I bet I'd be a slim minority of pro players that drove a beat up FORD pickup to the stadium. It's just unreal to think of how much money is thrown around in this league. and in all sports. Our country is struggling to keep everyone employed and stay out of debt. And a guy can swing a bat once, break his hand, and sit out, and make a million dollars. 's just not fair.

oh well....guess it's just the nature of human beings...always want more. always want more.

I just think it's a joke that he's whining about the team getting rid of his buddies Eduardo Perez, Placido Polanco, Eli Marrero and J.D. Drew.

Perez, Polanco and Marrero are utility players that are a dime a dozen and can be had by much cheaper. Drew is a wast of a uniform and was making way too much money.

If Albert thinks that having his buddies (and I have a feeling it's more about Polanco, Marrero and Perez) around, as opposed to freeing up money to pay his *** AND improve the sorry pitching staff...well, then somebody's got their priorities way out of wack.

It pretty much comes off as Albert wants to make a ton of money, hang out with his Latin buddies and if he wins a World Series, well then that'd be nice too.
