Seatle is getting old. Freddy Garcia has under-achieved for the last two years giving us no reason to say he will pitch as good as he did in 01. I think Aurilia will be a bust in Seatle and Spiezio isn't very good. I like their bullpen and the starting rotation is adequate. I'd put Toronto over them right now because Toronto has stellar offense and enough pitching to complement it. Lily pitched very well down the stretch last year and I think he'll be okay in Toronto. Batista had a great year last year and has looked just as good in the spring. And Hallday is one of the top pitchers in the game, for some reason a lot of people tend to overlook him when that discussion arises. If they can find someone to close out games they'll be very good. Meanwhile, Seatle's rotation is slightly above average and their offense is average at best with absolutely no power in it. Oakland has won the division two years in a row with mediocre offense so what reason do we have to say they can't do it again?

Seattle's rotation: Moyer, Pineiro, Garcia, Meche, Franklin
Oakland's rotation: Hudson, Zito, Mulder, Redman, Harden
Anaheim's rotation: Washburn, Colon, Escobar, Lackey, Ortiz
Toronto's rotation: Halladay, Batista, Hentgen, Lilly, Towers
Rotation average Quality Starts in 2003
Seattle: 18.8
Oakland: 19.6
Anaheim: 16.4
Toronto: 15.2
These numbers include a projected full 2003 year for Josh Towers and Rich Harden.
Rotation average WHIP in 2003
Seattle: 1.28
Oakland: 1.19
Anaheim: 1.37
Toronto: 1.23
Freddy Garcia had severe ear aches last year that hindered his balance on the mound. He said he has been pitching without any ear problems this spring, so I expect him to pitch similar to the first half of 2002. You then put Rafael Soriano and Hasegawa in before Guardado, and that's one deadly pitching staff up in the Pacific Northwest.Comment
