Re: Mets-Braves (As if there was a better way to open the season)

It's like they take 1 step forward with Matsui and take two steps back by signing Trachsel to an extension and platooning Garcia and Spencer at right. Don't get me wrong, Garcia made two great catches on Tuesday night, but Garcia/Spencer is not the answer at right field. Trachsel has been really consistent lately, but there is Heilman and Seo ready to take the reigns. There was NO need to extend his contract.

You guys might have forgotten, Trachsel was the only guy who could win a game for us last year!! True, the extension was too pricey, he's not worth $5 million a year. But the guy isn't a bad pitcher at all. He played like [censored] last night, believe that.

Re: Mets-Braves (As if there was a better way to open the season)

no, i havent forgotten what Trax did for us last year...but as Ralph Kiner always says they told him in Pittsburgh, when HE asked for a contract "we can finish in last place without you"....im just questioning the logic of a team that says its rebuilding with youth as the focus, then re-ups aging pitchers like Trax and Franco...theres nothing "wrong" with either guy, but we'd be better served giving the rotation spot to Heilman or Seo, and the BP spot to any number of kids down on the farm

now, i am in no way giving up hope on this season, but realistically if anyone has expectation of much beyond a .500 season, theyre probably fooling themselves....COULD it happen? sure...is it likely? no....personally, i would look to move the likes of Glavine, Trax, Erickson, Stanton, Weathers (and most anyone, really) in search of talent (youthful at that) upgrades in RF and the rotation....Leiter is 10 & 5 and wont go anywhere, so we're stuck with him...i would include 3B as a needed upgrade, but it looks to be in good hands with Wright on the horizon (i understand the Indians wanted him for Milton Bradley, thank god we said no to that one)

dont get me wrong, i think Jim Duquette has done one hell of a job so far, with last year moving Burnitz, Alomar, Benitez and replenishing the farm system..and the offseason additions of Matsui & Cameron are also to be lauded....but if the mantra is rebuilding, then rebuild....we are NOT going anywhere with the current rotation, i promise...weve got Kazmir, Peterson, Keppel in the minors and "projected" to crack the ML roster in 2005, possibly late this year for one of more of them....things are looking good for the youth movement, but continuing to resign aging veterans with no real value (outside of being a favorite of the owner) is not the move here

i know Rome wasnt built in a day, but this contract extension doesnt sit well with me, not at all

Re: Mets-Braves (As if there was a better way to open the season)

I understand that an extension would irk people, especially for how much it is for. However, he might bring some intangibles to the table that none of us know about. We keep Franco around because the guys is basically a palyer/coach for us. You ever notice the bullpen during games?? Franco basically is a bullpen coach that also pitches for us, that is why I have no problem with keeping Franco for as long as we have to, as long as we don't pay him an obscene amount of money. Trax might be doing the same thing and we don't know about it. There has to be a good reason behind this (it wouldn't surprise me though if there wasn't). I'm just going to play "wait and see" before I call for a head.

Is Seo not in the rotation right now?? I must have fallen asleep, I thought he was our #4.

Did we scratch Leiter?? I thought we moved Trax up a day so Leiter could pitch! God it sucks being down in Memphis where information in our paper is useless!!

By the way 3 HR for Mike in 2 games?? He might be playing 1B by May!
