    Re: MLB Off-Topic

It kind of just sounds like the whole have your cake/eat it scenario. If you want a rulebook strike zone, you have to go by what it calls. If that is a strike by definition, then I don't see a problem with it.

Then again, maybe that's also another reason why I don't want the thing myself. I'll be on the other end saying: "This is what we get, and this is what pitchers will be abusing."

I say if we go with this system, call all them strikes.

I don't want robot umps either but when it predictably goes bad I'm not sure celebrating by saying "you're getting what you asked for" is the way to go at this point.

If they're going to do it, I'll take them fixing as much as they can over being happy that they were wrong to institute it.

The way I've always thought of for robot umps to have a compromise would be the robot umps determining if the ball crosses the plate.

The human umps only job is to say if the ball is high or low (and check swings).

The width of the strikezone is a fixed thing. Doesn't matter if you're Trout or Altuve, the plate is a fixed dimension. So that one you need consistency.

        The height is different.

See, I always wondered if these K-zones on TV are adjusting for heights. I’m sure there is some profile thing where they enter the player’s height to set it, but like if a player crouches more is it changing with their knees? Because I never felt that it did.

If the robo ump takes a bounced pitch in his robo 'nads, will the batter still step out of the box and let him recover?

Right. What are the unwritten robot umpire rules? Gotta write up some passive aggressive rules to make sure the robot umps are miserable too.

Commentator: Stepping up to the plate, Jose Altuv....and the umps say that's strike 3, he's out, the ball game is over! Can you believe that! 1 up, 1 down, a perfect game!

the most important thing being overlooked in regards to balls and strikes being automatically called by a computer camera is will managers be able to go up into the stands/pressbox/wherever to kick dirt on said computer camera

No, we'll just get managers complaining about being wrong.

"I don't care if the cameras said the ball crossed the plate, what game was it watching? From where I was sitting, that definitely looked way outside."

When I first heard about the automated strike zone idea way back in the day, I used to envision it as an arcade-style ping sound on the scoreboard with a voice that goes "Strike!" throughout the stadium. I have it in my head and can't get it into words haha.

I still say if they implement it, they do it quietly and without anybody's knowledge. Hell, they did it with the baseballs. People will catch on and they can deny it, but I'd like a hushed version if it happened. Maybe it'll get those like me to turn around and see the effect as working for the better without actually knowing it's there.

I use to hate the idea of a "robot" umpire.

But then after years of watching Angel Hernandez call strikes and balls behind home plate, I've changed my mind -- bring on the robots.

It'll be so obvious if they switched cold turkey and without telling anyone, because umps who have established their own consistent zones for years (which might be outside the definition of the rulebook strikezone) could have their zones change drastically.

It's also be really obvious if it makes Angel Hernandez look competent at his job.

I don't know...I'm willing to give it a shot at this point - I'm less against it than I used to be, at least.
