Yep…exactly my point. No one looked at the numbers and saw he only played 28 games…they were like “Palmeiro, he’s a GG guy so I’ll vote for him.” That would never happen today.

There's so many instances where people today can't complain about change/hurting the integrity or history of sports because sports history has always had crazy things. Tino Martinez would've been the guy to win if it was based on proper standards.

GG seems like an award that makes sense as an eye test/reputation thing, as opposed to using counting statistics, but 28 games does seem low. Seems like he was just the generally agreed upon best defensive 1B in the league in that era. Managers/coaches vote on that award. With mostly repeat winners through the years.

Raffy's GG and Harold Baines's HOF selection are good rejoinders to "only players/coaches should vote on awards, ASG, and HOF because THEY PLAYED THE GAME!!!" talk.

Astros are still an NL Central team in my mind lol. Detroit in the AL East...that feels weird.

It took me forever to get used to the Braves and Falcons no longer being western division teams. It seemed strange to me as a kid them being thought of as western but when they left the West, it seemed equally strange that they were no longer West.

Braves/Dodgers in '91 and Braves/Giants in '93 were very compelling division races as a neutral fan.

We still have another 7 years to go before they've spent more time in the AL West than NL Central!

Some of the current divisions crazy enough haven't been around that long compared to other versions

AL West with Angels,Rangers,Mariners,As,Royals,Twins was around for 17 years

The 4 team AL West As,Mariners,Rangers,Angels was around for 19 years

Current AL West has been around for 12 years

Even the Tigers, for current fans it'll seem weird thinking of them as an east team. They were in that division for 29 years. That's still longer than the Rays have been in that division even though most people probably think of the current division as the most known version of the AL East.

Depends on the logo I'm looking at.

I see this, and I think AL:

Subconsciously I still think of the Tigers as an AL East team. The last week of the 1987 season (Jays blow a 3.5 game lead to the Tigers with 7 games to play, including 4 1-run losses to Detroit) remains burned into my brain.
