This better be because of the election if not this way too long after the season, Jesus, might as well do it on New Years Eve.

This is when they have always been announced...am I missing something? For example, last year the MVP's were announced on November 19th.

Can't say I remember, regardless, I think is too late. I guess MLB does it to "extend" and hold interest after October but I feel that instead it just makes the announcements an afterthought, the public has already move on.

By doing it next week (November 7/8/9/10 on a non election year) they might ride the WS momentum, if any.

Or maybe the public doesn't care regardless so it doesn't matter. Do it on Election Night at 7:00pm ET.

Not arguing that it's too late...I've always said it should be done DURING the post-season and prior to the WS. I think MLB misses an opportunity...for example, let's say the MVP is Bryant. You could actually be watching the MVP in the World Series...

That's what I thought SDS was doing when announcing their cover athlete during the World Series. I figured there was a greater chance somebody like Bryant was the cover athlete, and it would make sense because of the timing of it all.

But hey, Griffey was no slouch pick either.

I've seen how numerous people wanted to get Bartman to throw a pitch in the WS, come out to the parade, do an interview, etc. He has repeatedly refused and deflected all attention to the team even though any appearance would indubitably get him a standing ovation.

              Quote from Bartman's spokesman:

After 13 years as a scapegoat, a weight was lifted off Steve Bartman's shoulders when the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the World Series on Wednesday, and according to a spokesperson, the victory brought happiness to the Windy City's former public enemy No. 1.

"We don't intend to crash the parade. The one thing that Steve and I did talk about was if the Cubs were to win, he did not want to be a distraction to the accomplishments of the players and the organization."
I think, in today's world of selfish people, this is great...a guy that doesn't want any attention, light or news on him but rather the team. He has said all the right things in very simple sincere words.

Also...in a way, I don't blame him - all the hate/ridicule he got, I'd be thinking (albeit not saying): "Shove it, Chicago - I ain't doing anything for you."

Yeah, I don't mind how Bartman has handle it. This is about others (some of those who trashed him and made his life hell in one way or another) trying to make themselves feel better.

Do people even know what he looks like today? Wonder if that could be part of it too. Outside of the video from the infamous moment, do they really got many pieces of video footage of him? Even if most people have forgiven him, you know there'll always be at least that 1 idiot who tries something.

For all we know, he just live his regular life in Chicago and nobody even recognizes him anymore.

The people of Chicago did everything they could to ruin the poor guy's life. I don't blame him for not wanting to participate in anything to do with the team.

You are so true about the about that first part. That's the whole reason, I'm guessing, he didn't want anything to do with all this. He hasn't been seen by the public (metaphorically) since this incident 13 years ago. I don't blame one for it for telling the Cubs to shove it.

I'm not even sure why he's still a Cubs fan. If that happened to me and I was basically banned from a city because of that I would seriously consider never coming back and switching teams or something.

He still lives and works in Chicago.

Wouldn't be shocked if he threw out the first pitch at opening day next year. I can understand not wanting anything to do with the team during the run this year, if they ended up losing and he was in any way involved I can only imagine the backlash from it.

                            Basically.

Probably in his mind, seeing the championship drought end was a necessary condition to coming out of the shadows. Can't think of a better time to patch that old wound than Opening Day 2017 celebrating the team's first title in 108 years.

Yep, I bet Bartman's life has been a bit hellish at least the first couple years after the incident. I remember ESPN did a doc and wanted to talk to him but he wouldn't even talk on camera or anything. The man basically fell off the face of the earth.

It would be a wonderful moment to have him throw out the first pitch and made to feel a part of the fan base again.

I wonder what kind of life he can even live?
He must keep friends very close to the vest and I wouldn't be shocked if he couldn't even enjoy simple things like Facebook.
He's basically had to live a life of a hermit just to avoid scrutiny.

I've read that the Cubs have been trying for years to mend that fence and get him to be part of some type of ceremony at Wrigley but he's refused every time.

He was SOOO unfairly vilified the poor guy is probably shell-shocked still.

Speedy, I agree with your assessment too. I wonder if part of his silence is to hose those who now look like a'holes for how they treated him.
I know if I was sitting where he was, I would have reached for that foul-ball - just like the 12 people sitting around him did.

(I also wonder, and this is terrible for me to think, that maybe he wouldn't have received such immediate, venomous treatment, if he looked like a 'typical' dude instead of wearing a turtleneck, glasses and headphones. Something tells me if he looked more like Joe Everybody, he wouldn't have received such nasty treatment off the hop)
