So this was ruled a home run because umpires thought it hit the catwalk at the Trop. It didn't. Kiermaier just misplayed it so badly that they thought it did because he's a "gold glove caliber" CF.

Harold Reynolds apparently viewed that video for 20 minutes last night wondering WTF just happened. He was pretty much speechless when they showed that clip. I'm not sure what the hell the umpires were looking at. This is why they need to go forward with the crew chief announcing the review decision on the mic.

Seriously, that was NOT a HR. The ball took the weirdest turn i've ever seen but it didn't hit anything.

It just sliced as if he hit it to the opposite field. That's rare for a pulled ball, which makes sense why Kiermaier read it so poorly, but that's atrocious for the replay to call it a HR.

That ball didn't even slice that much...Kiermaier just lost it and misplayed it. Unreal that replay didn't change that to a triple.

In other news, Sean Newcomb, Braves #5 prospect and big get in the Andrelton Simmons trade, has been called up make his debut on Saturday. I'll temper my expectations...he has never harnessed his command in the minors, so this could get ugly.

They had actually changed it to a homer on the field BEFORE replay. Watch the whole video...it's a triple, then they send him home calling it a homer. Kevin Cash then comes out and challenges it...Replay upheld the call.

                        Re: MLB Off-Topic

I'm extremely intrigued by that video.

Given that the pitch was a slider into a lefty who took an inside out swing and pulled it the slice that happened would not be something any outfield is accustomed to seeing on a regular basis so it is quite possible (regardless of the caliber of outfielder BTW) to misplay it.

I also agree that this should never have been switched to a HR on the field, should have stayed a triple and let replay go from there.

However, there are a couple things about this that really have my interest piqued.

If you haven't already, watch Kiermaier rather than the ball on the replay. He never loses a beat until the end of the route. Anyone who has played outfield knows that when you lose a ball, you have that "Oh ****" moment when you realize you have no idea where it is. That didn't appear to happen here.

If he was tracking the ball, he would have realized it before it landed and turned around or attempt to adjust. Just odd to me that that never happened.

Other strange thing, they (umpires) were all pointing at something, and what they were pointing at never seemed to be called into question. Forgive me for not knowing the Ray's managers name but (via my best lip reading of the clip) the question asked after the decision was why is it a homerun and not what did it hit.

I'm just very intrigued by this and those are kind of my outstanding questions. Still agree it should have been called differently on the field.

This is 'Murica, speak baseball. You'd think after the whole Adam Jones debacle last month that a Red Sox announcer, of all people, would steer clear of expressing incredibly terrible, discriminatory opinions on air.
Problem is Jerry Remy and Mike Schmidt's remarks are tacitly accepted by a far too large chunk of the American populace. These people are just publicly visible mouthpieces of a pervasive and problematic tradition of 'backward-ism', nativism, and ignorance that no amount of education or technological/social progress ever seems to fully eradicate.

He had to have either lost it in the lights, or he saw it off the bat, put his head down to get to the spot, then couldn't find it again because of the slice which would not be expected.

Agree 100% but to me he appears to be tracking it the whole way. I feel like if he lost it he would have moved to either a full back turn or half back turn at some point but never even tried.

The live video (first part of the video before the slow motion replays after) certainly does appear to show the ball take a sharp direction change while it's in front of the scoreboard making it hard to see. That can be discounted by the quick switch of camera angles though so not banking anything on that.

The slow mo replays look like nothing but a real gradual slice.

I want to emphasize however that I am not advocating it for sure hit something, there are just a few things off about this that leave that small amount of doubt in my mind.

Regardless of the caliber of player, you don't mis-run a route that bad without it being obvious to everyone he lost the ball.
