Should we take Ty Cobb out of the hall because he was a blatant racist, some believe so. Now you might say that's not relevant. But, the problem with political correctness is it never ends.

People just pick and pick, anything that remotely offends them, they want gone, and it's gotten really old.

That's just plain incorrect, but that's not a discussion that would last long.

I would prefer if Jon Miller called the World Series.

No thanks, there are some quirks to Jon Miller's call that would drive not just me but North America up the wall.

He's a better listen on local broadcasts (especially radio) than national ones, though I think he's great regardless.

Just got caught up and apparently team names is a big topic once again. Also weird to see a long time mod get canned in the crossfire.

I'm not so sure. As a fellow North American, I have to say that I always liked Jon Miller back when he did Sunday Night Baseball. Was never a fan of Joe Morgan, but I thought they made a better team that what we've had since then. I wouldn't mind Jon Miller doing some calls on big games. Compare him to Costas, Buck, etc and it's not really a contest imo. Pair him with a better analyst that Joe Morgan (Smoltz? David Ross?) and it could be really good.

It sounds like you are absolutely correct, I haven't read much about Ty Cobb, since I was really young, and was trying to learn about historic greats before my time.

I read the book by Al Stump, which I now just literally learned was a outright lie. I'm glad you brought this to my attention, I should know better too with my dislike for the major media, and many sports writers.

One stroke of the pen, and you can destroy a man's image, just like that. Terrible. Knowledge is power.

I mean, he was a pretty bad guy, and by today's standards incredibly dirty, and I think there's some truth to him going into the stands and punching a woman in the face, but racist he is not lol.

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

So after doing some home run research, last season (2015) there were exactly 5000 home runs hit. That's the only time that the total has hit right on the nose like that.

And this season (2016) was 13 homers shy of being the most all-time. That belongs to 2000, when 5,693 balls went over the fence.

The total hasn't dropped below 4500 since 1995, when it was 4081.

The years certain thresholds were passed for the first time (and who led the league):

                  500- 1911 (21- Frank Schulte, Cubs)
                  1000- 1922 (42- Rogers Hornsby, Cardinals)
                  1500- 1930 (56- Hack Wilson, Cubs)
                  2000- 1950 (47- Ralph Kiner, Pirates)
                  2500- 1961 (61- Roger Maris, Yankees)
                  3000- 1962 (49- Willie Mays, Giants)
                  3500- 1977 (52- George Foster, Reds)
                  4000- 1987 (49- Mark McGwire, A's & Andre Dawson, Cubs)
                  4500- 1996 (52- Mark McGwire, A's)
                  5000- 1998 (70- Mark McGwire, Cardinals)
                  5500- 1999 (65- Mark McGwire, Cardinals)

Notice a trend there at the end? Lol.

And to put an end to this pointless post, since the American League joined the Majors in 1901, there have been 280,025 home runs hit. If the trend continues, we should pass 285,000 this year.

Wasn't there a rumor last year that the balls used for the 2016 were "livelier" than in the past, or am I making that up? Seems like I remember that from somewhere...

In new ballpark news, the same guy that oversaw the construction of the old Ballpark in Arlington will oversee its replacement. They are sticking to the three year timetable to get this ready by April 2020

There was a rumor that the balls were juiced.

I agree that he's better than some of the other guys and I enjoyed his work with Morgan especially in the era when the games selected were more "random" rather than sticking to the same ol' teams. He probably would do well with Smoltz or even Ross if he were to go into broadcasting. I might've been a bit dismissive there but I remember the last few years at ESPN where he was coasting and got to caught up in the over pronunciation of latin ballplayers names.

That whole "juiced baseball" thing doesn't really follow for me. If that was the case then you'd expect monster numbers from the best sluggers, but instead it was really more that the lesser players hit one or two more homers each and it all just added up. The difference between 5000 and 5500 homers in a season is only about 15 more per team, that's really not very many and could be caused by so many different things. (personally if I had to put it on any one thing it would be the continued shift away from small ball. More sluggers, less stealers)

And, ahem, weather. We keep setting a new record for hottest year ever with each passing year. A half-a-degree here or there could help boost HR totals a bit. I don't think there's a smoking gun, like balls being wound tighter at a new factory or whatever despite research to the contrary. More likely a bit of everything contributing.
