      Rules question.

A fielder catches a the ball either in the air or over the wall and falls out of play. Why is this considered an out if the fielder wasn't able to stay in play for an extended time?

Somebody with the rules definition will probably come in here and correct me but I always thought it was legit because the Fielder was considered in play if both of his feet were touching or above the playing field when he caught the ball. So if he's leaping over the fence and catches the ball his feet are still above the warning track therefore he's in play.

That's essentially it. The player is established in the field of play at the time of the catch, then goes out of the field of play. If he were bobbling the ball or something and secured it while he was out of play it would be a foul ball/HR.

The player has to re-establish himself in the field of play before throwing.

Maybe I have a football mindset...doesn't make sense if a fielder jumps and catches the ball but lands outside the field of play that it's considered an out if he wouldn't have been able to stay inside the field of play otherwise. Examples include players that jump on the tarp or something on the foul line.

Yeah I tend to agree. Not sure why they don't have to stay in the field of play for it to be considered an out.

Would you rather your team score several runs early and try to maintain the lead or score several runs late? Both resulting in a win.

Probably maintaining the lead if we're going to get the win either way, at least that way you've got a little peace of mind.

Come backs are always more fun. At home the crowd gets to go wild. Away, the crowd gets silenced.

Maintaining a lead isn't peace of mind for me, it can be a stressful nail biter.

100% agree. I'd much rather have an exciting comeback than a stress-inducing early lead or a big early lead where the game isn't very interesting late.

A couple of good longform articles from Deadspin and The Ringer, respectively. One is about a guy who flipped over the railing (but survived) at old Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati during the 1981 season. It is aptly titled The Kid Who Didn't Die At Riverfront Stadium. The second is titled The Bill James of Japan and is about the budding Japanese sabermetrics movement in the NPB.

And this third one is an oldie (2012), but one of the best longform pieces I've read. Not surprisingly, it's by Wright Thompson--one of the few ESPN contributors/writers that is really good. No particular reason for posting this one other than it's a good read and an interesting expose of what life can be like for prospects that bust out--obviously this being an extreme and unusual case that has to do with way more than baseball.

Thanks for the article links. Agree about the ESPN Wright Thompson article (remember when they sorta cared about sports at ESPN?).

I'll add a recent one. I honestly never paid much attention to Hideki Irabu since I hated the Yankees, but this is a very, very sad and sobering article, worth a read if you're feeling just a little too happy one day.

Twenty years ago, Hideki Irabu arrived in the United States hoping to find glory in pinstripes. He found heartache instead.

In softball, it's as such that as long as no feet are on dead ball surfacing, then you are considered in play by rule.

This is especially important for softball because you aren't always playing in enclosed areas, and some of the out-of-play territory may be drawn by a chalk line or something. So using that example, if you have your feet entirely over dead ball territory when you catch the ball (not contacting it) and the last surfaced touched was live ball territory, that is still an out.

So basically, Machado couldn't step over the fence and onto the 3rd base seating pavement to make a catch, but he could leap into the stands and make the catch while in mid-air.

Yeah, this was a good article. Sad, but a good read. I actually didn't know that Irabu was biracial/only half Japanese. And I'll be darned if there isn't a little bit of facial resemblance to Babe Ruth in that picture where Irabu's making a pitch while wearing a Yankees uniform. Makes the whole thing somewhat more tragic/ironic for me.
