Re: MLB Off-Topic
Some random baseball thoughts from yesteryear...I was looking at Paul Konerko's career numbers and didn't realize what a solid career he put up. 439 homers is nothing to sneeze at. Then I realized he was traded straight up after 1998 by the Reds to the White Sox for 1-year of Mike Cameron. What were the Reds thinking? I know Konerko was still a prospect, but he had absolutely mashed at every level (37 HR/127 RBI at AAA in 1997).
I remember the trade, but didn't realize it had been such a short sighted trade for the Reds."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I realize that we've already had 'that talk' about Harold Baines, but I belatedly noticed this interesting article from The Ringer:
The right fielder was tapped for Cooperstown on Sunday despite numbers that fall well short of the typical enshrinee’s. What would happen if we put in every player who performed at a similar level?

I present to you The Hall of Baines.
We are already fighting that now as guys are competing against players in the 90s with blown up stats.
I can't acknowledge arguments that begin by choosing a bunch of players who put up similar numbers to Baines and saying this is the new Hall.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Regarding the topic of the Rays...
I think in recent years, the only way a team can succeed is to have success within 5 years. Look at recent examples:
Arizona Diamondbacks: playoffs in 2 years, championship in 3.
Vegas Knights (NHL): playoffs in 1 year (huge success)
Toronto Raptors: Playoffs in 4 years, EC semi-finals in 5
Winnipeg: Playoffs in 4 years...doesn't have attendance numbers but sells out their arena
I can't also speak to the hockey teams but at least for the others, I can immediately think of stars on their initial playoff teams. Who on Tampa would be considered a star? Blake Snell is their lone all-star...I think they need a star that the city can gravitate toward and be a promoter almost for the team in the city, somebody kids would want to see play.
I don't see the team doing well in Montreal and I doubt MLB wants to move games to Mexico. I think Charlotte would be a bad idea because of the amount of Braves fans here in NC and they're just not going to pickup the support. I think the best and likely target would be Vegas if the team moves.
That's just my $.02 on the matter.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Meh. Players should not all be defined by their numbers only or be compared by numbers only.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Speaking of HOF, Mike Trout already has the 90th highest fWAR in baseball history and he likely will play at least another 10 years.
The guy could retire today and I think be a 1st ballot.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I think there's something to the idea that Ottavino (and the modern day relief pitcher in general) is an animal that Babe Ruth would need to adjust to. I'm not sure if that means 1 practice swing or several, but I am confident that the greatest hitter of all time (sorry, Barry) could hit Adam Ottavino. And could probably hit any other modern day pitcher, save for perhaps the nastiest Randy Johnson-type LHPs the game has ever seen.

Thought we were talking about Ruth vs Ottavino? Not Theodore Samuel Williams vs Ottavino.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Unfortunately no, but speaking of August 11th and Pirates, we're surprisingly already 4 months removed from Barry Bonds (of both Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants fame) having his number retired on August 11th when his former team the San Francisco Giants hosted his former former team the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 months ago.Boston Red Sox
