    Re: MLB Off-Topic

Field goal netting isn't infallible, but why can't there be a similar netting that can be lowered between innings, post game, pre-game, etc. so you still maximize fan interaction, but keep things safe?

People would get used to and get over it. I know this is going to sound a bit out there, but my opinion is baseball needs all the viewership it can get. It's inherently boring to watch on TV for a lot of kids and taking kids to the ball park helps a lot. Just go to a 5-6 baseball game and see how much interest any kid playing outfield has. Teams put the fastest kid at pitcher and have them run down base runners while everyone else watches. If you want the sport to grow you need kids to care about it.

People also form long-term opinions about something based on what's put in front of their face and if the media is saying it's dangerous for kids to sit in a ball park there are a lot of parents out there that just won't go.. even if it's not something that's unlikely to be an issue.

I wouldn't impulsively do anything if I was MLB either and I don't see them changing much unless somehow incidents continue to flare up, but I do think they should find a way to address the issue if they can.

It would be great if they could have the netting raised/lowered, or even open/close it curtain style.

I'm sure it wouldn't be so hard to do that. Have it lowered pregame so fans could enjoy all that interaction and possibility of getting a ball. Once game begins, the netting is up(they have a good 30+ minutes before game begins to do that once BP is over).

I know at Yankee Stadium (and I believe Camden Yards and Citi Field) the netting is raised during pregame so the players can interact with fans, sign autographs, etc. I sat close to the net at Camden a few weeks ago and we were told that the players weren’t allowed to sign anything during the game (so the netting wouldn’t make a difference during the game) and after the game ended, an opening near the dugout was opened up for people to come ask for autographs again. So I think as far as fan interaction goes, the nets have had very little impact (or can if least be made to have very little impact).

Just saw that today is 30th anniversary of the opening of Skydome/Rogers Centre. Crazy fact, it's almost been named Rogers Centre for longer than it was Skydome. People still call it Skydome. I know non sports fans who still call it Skydome.

I know we live in a world where corporate names (especially banks and airlines) take over stadium rights, but I really hope if a new company ever gets the naming rights, just add Skydome after the company name.

The positive PR you gain from that alone is almost worth it. Not to mention obviously having your name associated with an MLB stadium.

A few points now that I can login to OS again (server was choking yesterday?)...

            1. Whether more netting happens or not (and it should, there is literally no valid counterargument when weighted against little kids getting carted off to the hospital with broken faces) I hope parents will keep in mind it's their job to keep their kids safe. Say what you want about getting a 4-year-old to pay attention to the game, but you damn well better be paying attention if those kids are yours!

            2. This whole debate will become moot when Scotty comes back in time with the formula for transparent aluminum. Netting? What netting? Completely invisible.

            3. Unrelated--what the hell is going on with Ben Zobrist? People get divorced all the time but don't take a leave of absence from their high-paying jobs for several months. Seems truly odd and I wonder what's going on there. Apparently his wife made a post or something that sounds all feelingsball and borderline nonsensical. Kinda one of those step away from your social media moments until things clear up...

Does Scherzer have a shot at 300 Ks?

As for Zobrist...who knows...I wouldn't rule out the idea that the Cubs might've told him to take some time off rather than be a roster casualty...he was not producing at all, and would likely be last man on the bench...hard to say if there's even a spot for him.

I wouldn't rule it out but I'm sure he'll have a dip in effectiveness for 2-3 starts that might keep him from achieving that mark.

Probably, feels like the first guy to do it in back to back seasons since Randy Johnson or something.

You know I put alot of effort in that tweet and you have to shame me in front of OS.

I was hoping Phillies vs Mariners would be the WS matchup. Now Mariners have fallen and Phillies lose Cutch
