Field goal netting isn't infallible, but why can't there be a similar netting that can be lowered between innings, post game, pre-game, etc. so you still maximize fan interaction, but keep things safe?
People would get used to and get over it. I know this is going to sound a bit out there, but my opinion is baseball needs all the viewership it can get. It's inherently boring to watch on TV for a lot of kids and taking kids to the ball park helps a lot. Just go to a 5-6 baseball game and see how much interest any kid playing outfield has. Teams put the fastest kid at pitcher and have them run down base runners while everyone else watches. If you want the sport to grow you need kids to care about it.
People also form long-term opinions about something based on what's put in front of their face and if the media is saying it's dangerous for kids to sit in a ball park there are a lot of parents out there that just won't go.. even if it's not something that's unlikely to be an issue.
I wouldn't impulsively do anything if I was MLB either and I don't see them changing much unless somehow incidents continue to flare up, but I do think they should find a way to address the issue if they can.
