One less dumb discussion to have.
If they extend them, all of foul territory needs to be covered including from above.

MLB coming out and saying it was too dangerous to sit in the stands is going to be bad legally. I'm sure there are lawyers who could win and MLB thinking about it for some time would hurt them more. Then saying these sections are safe and don't need to be covered would open them up to a big lawsuit if someone gets hurt in the open area.

Things usually aren't done for safety, they are done to cover themselves for insurance or lawsuits. I think it will happen as long as it doesn't die down in the 2nd half of the season. Foul lines will be covered and some will increase the overhead screens.

I have a second reason on top of that, though. Any ball that is fouled back is guaranteed to have top spin. That is heavier with loads of sink. You couldn't duck away from that if you wanted to.

A ball hit over the dugout, in comparison, is almost assuredly off-contact (depends on the flatness of the swing though), whether sliced or hooked, and if fouled the other way will not have the hard bite that top spin has.

Anyway, just wanted to mention that small bit.

I personally enjoy reading people's viewpoints on this.

        There's people behind home plate?!!!

I couldn't see them because there's a damn net in the way.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

          But...it doesn't...

There's a significant difference in the reaction time between a foul pop-up and line drive foul.

On a pop-up, the ball is in the air for a while. Making it much easier to react to. The crowd sees it, everyone looks up, some people move and some people try to catch it.

On a line drive, you get the pitch, the crack of the bat, the ball is in the stands. Like Jr. said, in Houston it took the ball 1.2 seconds to go from the bat to that kid.

Keep the netting at it's current height. There's nothing wrong with that part whatsoever. Just extend it to where Texas is going in their new ballpark (where the foul territory ends for the most part), every stadium is set up very similarly.

This really isn't that difficult, and I'll never not be shocked at how many people are against it.

People have been speculating for months about how MLB will look in the Nike era. Today we have our first glimpse of what’s to come.

Okay, let's say all that is fine. What about the Dodgers fan from last year, though? Do we chalk that one up as an anomaly above all others? After all, it's the first death from a foul ball recorded in an MLB game in 45 years.

So late to this. But you gotta protect people. It's just impossible to defend yourself from a 112 mph liner in the stands. There's nothing you can do except hope it misses you.

Netting is necessary to protect people from that. These guys these days hit the ball so hard. I can't imagine getting hit in the head by a Judge line drive. That's death.

Yet you and countless others would still buy a ticket there anyway before the 2018 season, correct? Maybe even brought a glove as a little countermeasure? I know I did (not always the glove). Something inside of me always hoped a ball would be hit my way, even a line drive. Maybe I'd think twice about it once it actually happens (or maybe it would strike me so hard as for me to not be able to think such thoughts thereafter), but who knows?

It just seems like people may have been ignorant to the fact that fatal hits their way could potentially happen, yet they chose to sit there anyway. No complaints. Even if one did whiz by, I bet you'd say: "Whew, that was a relief" a thousand times over before you would have said: "They should have a freakin' net in front of us!"

One doesn't have anything to do with the other.

Your scenario could all be true.

We could still add netting so your hypotheticals aren't even possible to mitigate risk.

I'm actually on your side with this, but you have yet to make any sort of a good argument. Going to extremes to debate others is never productive.

Honestly, my argument is just that bad things happen and I don't want any more netting.

Even saying it, knowing what has happened to some makes me feel ignorant for saying it but at least I can admit as such without resorting to ridiculous hyperbole.
