Too bad, Goldstein is one of the most respected minds in analytics, if I remember correctly he is the guy that came up with the concept of "framing" and how to measure it at Baseball Prospectus.

MLB Off-Topic
So I watched the first half of that video and I’m not seeing consistency in the boom and the actual pitch. Sometimes one boom is a fastball, other times one boom is an off speed pitch, etc. Now, they certainly could have changed the “sign” up so that other teams didn’t catch on, but it seems to be inconsistent within individual at bats. It will be interesting to see what comes out of all this...

Here is one example
Seems like it's bangs during the regular season. They changed it to whistling and then added the catcher in the bullpen element when it became too loud.
Here is a 25 minute video of drums lol
You don't go from 15th in strike out for 5 years. To jumping to number one, two and one number the last 3.
And someone mentioned.... they never look caught off guard.
You can find a whole thread in Reddit. A lot of the info don't look good at all.
Edit: I saw some people say it doesn't matter (not in here). But for some of these high level hitters. It's crazy knowledge to know if a off speed pitch is coming or a fast ball. You just cut the game in. Now you just need location.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
There is much more out. That was a short taste. They are saying they had a catcher in the bullpen (mic in ear) that would raise his hands for fast ball or leave them down for off-speed pitches. There a lot close to showing batters just as the pitcher gets his signal from the catcher. They would look into the out field. And it's coming out for a lot of the games.

And yeah, it definitely helps to know what pitch is coming. There's a reason that players tee off when a pitcher tips his pitches or falls into a distinct pattern.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm not sure if this is referencing the whistling or eyes, but both aren't relevant. The whistling happens during the signs, not after. Altuve's eyes go to third base and for barely a split second. Unless the 3rd base coach is relaying it, he's not picking anything up there.
The 2nd video is much more convincing. I had trouble hearing it sometimes, but it definitely seemed synced up to the pitch.

But the first part. There are a bunch of videos of Astro players looking else where when setting up in the box. Not just that one instance of him glancing into left. There are theories that they moved the person around from game to game. So their players didn't all look weird. Because it takes Millie seconds to know fast or change. The glance is all you need.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Here is the example I was talking about. Look at his eyes.
I don't care what anyone says lol. Hitters don't do quick glances right before the wine up. And you can see in some clips when they change up the signals on them. They look completely fooled. That's not good.
Just follow that guy for most of the updates on this. Because was like the second person to break it.Last edited by jeebs9; 11-18-2019, 07:30 PM.Hands Down....Man Down - 2k9 memories

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The infielders will occasionally be the ones to tip the pitch by leaning one way or the other.
There is a TON of smoke here but glancing elsewhere before the delivery (by itself) isn't enough.one of them.
(And I'm not even suggesting nothing happened since it's pretty obvious shenanigans were going on. I do think people are reaching with some things at this point)Last edited by kehlis; 11-18-2019, 08:16 PM.Comment
